Well Anchorage is the main hub of Alaska, so he probably booked a flight to there, with layovers in either LA or Seattle.

Seattle, Minneapolis, and Salt Lake City are the only places I've ever been able to find a flight to/from alaska. And you can take a bush plane from Merrill Field in Anchorage to wherever else you'd be headed in AK. He can just buy a ticket for one of those when he gets there.
