I'm trying to do it. I'm on just over 4,000 words, but basically right now I'm being hit from all sides by work and uni taking up all of my time. Hopefully by the end of the week I should be able to play a bit of catch up.

I was worried that I'd have a situation similar to that, with work, and socialising and university all pressuring me and trying to put a dampener on what I wanted to achieve. Instead, I've just been staying up incredibly late to write, and make sure I'm actually being productive, with at least 1, 667 words a day.

Hello all. I normally don't come here often, I think I probably should though since I have a thread here that gets updated with journalistic entries. Whenever I'm not writing for The Interviewer I tend to review flash and the such and help out with other people's works if they're looking for help.

I've been toying with the idea of purchasing a signed first edition of Sir Terry Pratchett's latest Discworld Novel, Snuff.

It's got some of my favourite characters in it and as a result, owning one of these signed first editions would really give my collection a nice shot in the arm.

Anyone else got a signed book?

Signed books. I think I've got a couple from some Australian children's authors. Lately I've been getting my hands on signed books from small press authors in the bizarro genre/movement/scene. Got a couple of books from Andersen Prunty, Chris Bowsman's first book, as well as five others from when I won a competition, and I've got two more on their way. And I think I may be getting two more signed books from Jordan Krall shortly, maybe... They're not big name authors, and most of them have only put out their first books either this year or last year, but it's cool to just have that piece of history tied to the beginning of those authors' careers. If everything goes to plan, I'll be joining their ranks a little over a year from now. I pitched a novella to Eraserhead Press, who agreed to work on it with me for next year.

Is there a thread somewhere that just has short stories that were written specifically to be made into flash movies? (Not talking about sonic or mario fan stuff, but legit, original works.)

I was bored and thought to myself "hey self, you should make a random, short, quick movie" ...like something that would only take a day or two (think movie jam) ...then I thought, "hey, I wonder if there are any short stories in the writing forum for an occasion such as this."

So... is there a thread? If not, should there be?

I think there is, and there are several threads from authors whoring their scripts for animation. However, we don't really get many animators in search for scripts about anything, so those threads quickly die. You can post a thread explaining your situation (who you are, what you are doing, experience, whether the writer will be paid/unpaid, that jazz). Hopefully, you'll get responses and some solid scripts.

There are communal accounts like art101 and animation101 ...maybe there needs to be a writing101 ...and that account could catalog helpful links & threads for writers... and things like 'stories up for grabs' and a list of writers that are available for projects (games, movies, etc).

Just a thought.

Anyway, thanks for your time... I guess I'll just go rummage through the audio portal and see if something inspires me.

Agreed, if the animator knows how to do it, they will usually do something like that themselves, thus cutting out the middle man.

Personally, I'd say that reading script book is a useful way to go, as the proper ones (I have Father Ted and Blackadder) give stage directions, which can be very useful, both for the actors and for the casual reader, knowing what they should be seeing.

Why? Writing ain't about the money. Keep a journal and write every day. Work hard in school so you get a good job (and hopefully help other people) and write in your spare time. And, in very, very rare occasions, serenade the ladies with your awesome stories :D

Sup guys? I haven't been around here in a long-ass time, but I thought I'd start poking around again since I'm taking a fiction writing class and I have lots of new stuff in the works.

Yeah, something like that would be cool. I think it would improve the relationship between animators and writers, which could benefit NG a lot. I'm not really in any position to do it myself, but if someone else wants to go for it I'd be more than happy to help out.

Yep, that's good advice. If anyone wants to learn screenwriting, the best way to do it is to read lots of screenplays. Here's a great resource for that. I'd also recommend getting some kind of script formatting software like Final Draft (what the pros use) or Celtx (what I use, because it's free) to avoid a lot of hassle and make everything neater.

That said, like Nae hinted at, when it comes to animation things can get a little more complicated. A scene that would work perfectly in a live-action film might make no sense when you try to apply it to animation. Cartoons are just totally different in terms of spatial relations and pacing and how action plays out and how dialogue fits in and lots of other things, and it can be hard for someone who isn't an artist to wrap their head around it all works. I guess it ultimately comes down to how well the artist and the writer communicate with each other, and how willing they are to budge on their visions when the other person tells them that something isn't working.

I dunno, I've been thinking about a lot of this shit lately because I'm trying to write a pilot for a cartoon series.

See, isn't that brilliant. And I couldn't agree more - writing is not about money or wealth. But if I had the choice, all I would do is write. It's that element of the idea which intrigues me.

It seems that artists and writers when they come together, come together in the same way guitar players and vocals do. It is the process of finding the correct pattern to showcase the idiolect of the characters. I imagine a large amount of time and effort goes into doing this. However depending on the genre and your audience, depends on what style of artistry you will be looking for or what style of writing the artistry will be begging for. The overall result is probably governed by the producer, rather than the writing staff.

Okay, I'm going to start writing a book. I've been planning and getting ideas for about two years now and I finally think I have enough to create something long enough to become an actual novel. If the planning took that long I can only imagine how long the writing process will take since I work full time. It will literally be me only working about an hour a day on the days that I work and for several hours on my days off.

I know how you feel. I've been planning / editing a story since 2009. I've finally written the first paragraph. I've scrapped about two thirds of the original storyline (plot holes, too many artistic licenses, derivative stuff...).
Just because the planning took a long time doesn't mean writing it will take forever, especially if you write a bit every day like you plan to do. So don't be discouraged, it's the quality of the final product that is important, not how long it takes to complete it. Good luck!

hey, I'm somewhat new here, what a year since sign-up. i try to participate in this forum often, I've been involved in a story or two. i don't know if you saw the fantasy story thread a few months ago, i wrote in flint, the human. i also wrote in logic's zombie survival reboot, but came across a problem i run into very often, i lose interest and stop writing, i don't even kill off my character, i'm working on it.
Anyways, i use this forum often, I've put out a poem here and there. but regardless, my favorite thing in this forum is group writing projects where multiple people form there own character in a story, speaking of which, i am organizing one of these, its call the "friction starter" thread. i would appreciate some input, maybe some submissions, I've only really had one person respond, although they are extremely helpful, i posted to this site for variety, to help me not lose interest in the story, but i didn't post here to advertise a thread ( maybe a little) i just try to involve myself in NG's writing community, and this seems like a good way to go about it.
