You should just open a new file and draw heaps of sketches of a face from front on trying to get the poportions right. If it doesn't look right then it probably isn't. You can use a reference but make sure you look at the face as a whole and at each part of the face relative to the other parts of the face. Don't worry about colouring it, just try and get the figures and shapes looking right. Then perhaps try something harder and draw the face from an angle or zoom out and draw the top half of a person.
Or if you cbf practicing and just make sure your sketch looks right, if it doesn't then don't start inking and colouring it.
