What's all the hate on the Video Game genre?

Sure, a bunch of tracks in the VG genre are MIDI-rips and generic remixes, but if done right, VG music can sound awesome.

Video game music?
How can that be better than any other genre?
It is not even comparable. I just don't see how can people like it.
Undoubtly, some of them sound really professional.
But I'm not talking about how good it is done, I just think the whole genre sucks, and the fact that almost always at least 20 songs out of 30 on that list are SUCKY video game songs, just makes it worse.
I don't see why it's even listed as an individual genre.
Sorry video game music makers, just my opinion.

imo songs should just be placed in their real genre, be it 8-bit or DnB or Breaks or "classical". Would make people looking for VG music a bit more attentive i guess, and wouldn't give a place for fanboys to shoot their votes at.

I just love how this thread always devolves into hating on some individual genre despite how utterly retarded those kinds of generalizations are. If it isn't the constant complaints about whatever electronica genre happens to have the most tracks, its about how everything in the entire video game music genre is terrible, even though the genre itself is so ill-defined that saying something like that literally makes no sense, because video game music can be any goddamn genre you want, it just has to be used in a video game to count as video game music.

So, if you say all video game music sucks, you just said that ALL music sucks. Congratulations!

1. (Summ3rtime)
Oh god. Sex to the ears. Yes.

2. (Combustion Dynasty)
Pretty solid heavy tune. Mixing was a bit shallow, but hey, whatever.

3. (Dragonzball P)
Junk. Made it to super-status because it's Oney. At least it's listed as 'comedy'...

4. (Headrush)
I dunno... cafeteria-grade wubstep? Mixing could be a LOT better, especially during the buildups when the mid-range is squished to bits. Meh.

5. (Drumstep wip)
Same dude as above, and same problems. Mixing is just weird. I did like it more than the previous song, because he plays around with his beats a little.

The guy that made the last two isn't terrible. He has potential, he certainly knows how to string together a beat. He's just not doing anything NEW, and what he is doing isn't good enough to stand out, etc. He seems pretty popular(?) so maybe he'll get better.

The only submission that deserved its place in my opinion was Waterflame's.

Guys who get popular making par level music never really feel the need to get better in my experience.

Reminds me of Driver's game soundtrack, really funky. The song itself is very well composed , it never gets boring, the song is always changing patterns every 8 compasses which makes the variety amazing, i pretty much lost the count of the patterns used on this track.

Great Track!

#2

the track is pretty good, the mixing is clear but the song it's kinda repetitive. As a drummer I've always disliked metal, maybe because most kids that i encounter brag so much about how they kick ass on drums and they just play metal. I think the reason why i dislike metal is that it's just speed and no technique (talking about drums.)

But the track is nice besides my personal tastes

#3

Funny, but not good. Anyone with a kazoo and a microphone can pretty much the same. It's just his name what it makes it good.

#4 and #5

I have never liked his style, he always makes his chorus (drop) the same :

Change the patch every 4 or 2 compasses during the chorus. Seriously that's his formula on every track i have heard. The mixing could be better too.

Don't get me wrong , The tracks are good but i just can't understand why is he so popular. I think i even saw featured on dubstep net.

Music is my passion , not my business.

Decent. This kind of funk tends to sound a bit much like garageband loops unfortunately. Could've used a melody or some sort of consistent thing.

Generic metal, nothing too interesting at all except some stuff in the ending

the last one is not that bad.

Atleast it has a structure and nothing is out of tonality. The instruments could be better though.

but we have all been through that 'basshunter phase.

Meh, my standards are very high for dance songs, I'm afraid. If I hear that bass synth or that filter automating fade-in of the piano intro one more time in a song I'm going to puke.

Although yeah I guess it's slightly better than other 'Basshunter' songs on Newgrounds.
