Stamper's post: dark but true. He took his choice when he started on drugs.

R.I.P too soon, he was a great animator and his flash (among others) were what influenced me to get into flash in the first place.

Stick Slayer was actually one of the early flash series I've seen on newgrounds, back before I realized I could be a member (for free)
I still remember back when you had the theme music play on the collection page

thats a real shame.

I may have only been a member since 2005, but I've browsed on NG since 2002 (or 3)
I shall watch his series later tonight as a little tribute. If I have time, I'll shoot you a pm to join the collab, I'm just dealing with alot of homework right now, but would like to show that I was a fan of his work as well

Yes.
Just YES.

Strangest thing, I was just thinking of whether or not to reply to this topic, seeing as I never really knew the guy or his work and thought it would only be strange to give out my condolences to someone I don't know. Hypocritical in a way. Then I checked out his profile and he has a bunch of medals from one of my games. Strange as it may sound it actually kind of shocked me as it creates some kind of connection with him... Anyway, dying at such a young age is never a good thing, and I hope his family find all the strength and support they need.

May I ask...How did he die?

I heard it was from a heroin overdose, on his Mom's page. The link's in the post.

Today, I bit my girlfriend's neck. I felt something squirt into my mouth. Turns out I had just popped a pimple on her neck. Into my mouth. FML

A memorial page is a great idea to celebrate the artists we have lost, it would be a fitting section to the site.

You are in our prayers, Ben. R.I.P.

If you would've actually clicked the links in Tom's post you'd find it was heroin overdose.

i love newgrounds' sense of community. the rise and downfall of many a artist is documented with these posts, where anyone can add their two cents, usually in either blind support or senseless indignation. its a continual reminder that real people run this site through and through, and in the end we're all just flitting by to get a bid of attention.

that sounds really bitter, but i'm genuinely pleased that the site is the way it is, and that its not cold and aloof enough to not care about mentioning the people that make/have made it what it is.

a memorial page of sorts, despite how i'm sure people will figure out how to take a digital piss on digital graves, still sounds like a good idea.

i'm actually writing up a goodbye doc for someone to post on my page when i'm gone

Awww! I get sad when I think of how long Newgrounds will last and how all the people I know here will eventually be gone... :(((

Awww. I trust you will make a wonderful collab in his honor, Tom and everyone else involved.

Rest in Peace, Ben.

I didn't know him personally, but I was all too familiar with his work. I literally grew up watching it. It would be fair to say his stuff was one of many that truly inspired me to take up Flash. I only recently discovered he was also a musician, which had me even more impressed. So sad to see such an amazing talent pass.

RIP Ben.

Even today, his Pimp's Quest is an opus to contemporary status.

Goodbye Ben! It's been real.

Well, I can't say I knew him... or really, anyone who knew him here...

I can say I'm sad for his mother, and other family...but I personally have no pity for someone who's life ends because of a choice like drugs...

It was inevitable so...To the family; I'm sorry your son had to go out like that. To the man himself?... I hope you get another chance to make things right.

Response to Ben Spurgin, 1977-2009 2009-10-23 19:05:34

man... I cant believe this at all, it seems impossible to me. his work is amazing and has been inspiring to me ever since I started coming here, way back in the day.

seems like the good really do die young..

We will miss you, Ben, very much :(

I may not be very active in the NewGrounds community these days, but I remember Stick Slayer being one of the first series I saw when I started coming here.
It's never nice when someone of such creativity and friendliness is no longer with us.

Response to Ben Spurgin, 1977-2009 2009-10-23 19:24:56

Are you serious? Wow, can't believe it. I barely heard of hij but it's so sad to hear a fellow Newgrounder pass away at such a young age. R.I.P Newgrounds will miss you. :'(
