No Site VS Slow Site - You Decide 2004-02-12 17:40:04

Ok... We installed the new HD into our RAID array around noon today, but the site is still running like crap. This is because the RAID system needs to "rebuild" the HD by moving over lots of data.

This normally wouldn't take long, but it is doing it while serving out content to NG users, so as a result it runs really slow. After almost five hours, it was only 7% complete. This means the site could run like crap for a long time.

However, we took the site off-line for a few minutes and estimated it would have to stay off-line for about an hour to complete the update without interference. So we're gonna let the first 10 people who respond choose from two options:

1) Let the site run like crap for the rest of the day, then shut it down tonight while it completes the update.

2) Shut the site down right now, during peak hours, and get this over with.

Well, people dont understand how complex a sever can be. Yet along updates that need to be done. With the errors non-stop and slow running users will whine and if closed they will whine. Tom just close it and finish what needs to be done at a quality profession.

Shut it down during peak hours. When a site like this runs like crap, most of the time you can't run anything so it really is like shutting it down anyway.

I say get this shit over and done with. It's just gonna piss me off if the site keeps this shit up. I say we make sure that the site stays up to quality and finishes whatever it has to do.
