I'm not sure whether I would view the kid's actions as being 'good', but it's certainly understandable why he would respond in this way to the way that religion is clearly being forced on him. It just shows how people, and in this case children, are going to react potentially with alarming consequences when they have the overbearing presence of their parents' religion in their lives.
