Being deaf sucks

Story time.

Context: I'm almost entirely deaf from my right ear due to ear infections and complications I had when I was very young.

So yesterday evening, it felt like my left ear (i.e. the one that works) had a lot of earwax in it. I gently felt inside and sure enough, my finger was met with the soft, sticky sensation of deeply-nestled earwax. No big deal. My brilliant plan was to pull the earwax out with my finger, place it on a tissue and throw it away. Being the knucklehead I am, I didn't realise how dumb that idea was. I placed my finger inside my ear canal, and sure enough, only three-odd seconds into my excavation, I pushed the earwax too deeply inside my ear and clogged it entirely. I don't even know what I expected.

With my right ear already deaf and my left ear stuffed with ear wax, the reality of the situation slapped me in the face. I've become entirely deaf. I fished for some ear drops to try and loosen the wax and get it out, but after around an hour, I saw no improvements. With that failing, I accepted that I'm going to need to go to the specialist to flush my ear out and wallowed in the consequences of my stupid actions.

Meanwhile, I realised how much it sucks to be deaf. It's something that I, and undoubtedly many other people, don't really think about in detail unless it actually happens to us. It really removes a lot of everyday function that you otherwise take for granted. My alarm didn't wake me up this morning, I can't watch any YouTube videos, I can't make any music, I can't communicate with anyone unless they shout loudly at point-blank range... Unless I see the specialist today (which is doubtful since he's fully-booked), I can't go to my piano lesson tomorrow or university next week.

Above all, it's a weird and frustrating feeling. I'm unable to hear the footsteps under my feet, the light-switch as I flick it, the cars passing by outside or the familiar message tone when someone contacts me on Skype. The silence is surprisingly maddening.

So yeah, I'm not enjoying my little peek into the unfortunate life of a deaf person. Here's to hoping I get this sorted out soon.

Thanks for the support everyone. Just came back from the ENT specialist and, thank goodness, it's been taken care of.

I haven't tried using olive oil. First I tried with normal water and then with ear drops. I kinda gave up after that haha. The specialist prescribed a saline spray which I should apply to my ears once a week to avoid this happening again.

Same. I'm embarrassed to say I've used car keys like q-tips, and my ear drums constantly itch from it. I hope I don't go deaf!

Tinnitus really sucks. I'm lucky not to have permanent tinnitus, but I do get it now and again, often coupled with muffled hearing.

The specialist told me I had a huge amount of earwax in both ears, and used this tube connected to a machine to suck the earwax out from both ears. I find it painful, especially if the earwax is hardened, but it really does a thorough job. He also prescribed a saline spray to keep the ear canals clean. If it really becomes annoying, then you should definitely look into that.

That sucks.
Is there nothing you can do for your right ear? I hear technology is becoming pretty good at overcoming near-deafness. Implants of all sorts.

Good to hear your other ear is fine again.

I had pretty bad tinnitus in my right ear for about a year, about a year ago. It finally succumbed, to my extreme joy.
Then it came back a few months later, to my sorrow.

Fingers crossed.

I've often contemplated whether deafness or blindness would be more excruciating to endure. I've yet to form a conclusive opinion.

Alright thanks for the tip! I'll definitely look into it.
My doctor did some different earwax cleaning. Instead of sucking the earwax out of my ear, she gushed some water into my ear canal so a chunk of earwax would fell out. It worked pretty good for both my ears because the amount of earwax that flew out my ear canals was quite a lot. But there are some cons doing this, I noticed after. First, both my ears were full of water. Luckily it took me just 2 hours to get it out (Once it took me 2 weeks before some water came out of my left ear).
And second, the tinnitus which became remarkable. The water at fast speed has probably hurt something inside my ears.
I've also heard (after my treatment) from someone else that his acquaintance has also got tinnitus after he did this ear treatment.
So afterwards I think I could have better not done this. Ah well, bad luck.
Of course, I really discourage doing this treatment for your ears which I did. At least, if you do not want to risk tinnitus.
Though, I can still hear fine, like before. Only the permanent beep can be annoying but I got pretty used to it...

Recently agitated my ears while trying to protect them, sigh. I have a pair of Etymotic plugs and I was going to jam with some guitarist buddies last weekend so I stashed the plugs into my pocket. I get there and am definitely grateful I brought the plugs because the amps my friends have were doing a number on my ears. Unfortunately I stuffed the plugs in too far amidst my hurry and stressed out my inner ear, I've been hearing blood rushing and my heart beating all week. Things are finally getting back to normal the last two days but my left ear is still off a bit.

Moral of the story is protect your ears when trying to protect your ears.. or something like that.

Ouch, can't believe how frustrating that tinnitus comeback must've been. Hope it goes away for good next time.

I do have some options for my right ear. First off, I can always get a hearing aid for it. There are also specialised hearing aids out there for half-deaf people like myself, and there are implants which require surgery. Some of the aforementioned treatment isn't available in my country (Malta), and I'm inherently terrified of surgery. Even just needles gets me going.

The ENT specialist wasn't too enthusiastic about me wanting a hearing aid or some kind of treatment though. He said I don't really need it, and to be honest I don't disagree with him. I've spent nearly all my life with a deaf ear, and I don't remember what it's like having two working ears; therefore, I don't miss it. Ignorance is bliss. Is my deaf ear an inconvenience? Sure it is, but perhaps having a hearing aid in my ear all the time or drilling a hole in my skull for a hearing implant would end up being just as much of an inconvenience, not to mention expensive.

It's something I've considered before and something I might go for in the future, but I'm doing pretty alright as it is for now :).

Thanks Alt! It wasn't fun but I'm glad it's over. To think, I barely survived a day being deaf and there are people out there who have been deaf for all of their lives. Such a nasty disability.

I wanted to respond with a deaf pun as well, but couldn't think of anything so I thought of an alternative approach to the solution.

So, this is probably old to you all, but I thought I was the only one (since not having internet) that thought Seether's new hit sounded a lot like Tears For Fears' 'Mad World'. Apparently nobody else around me listens to 80's synthpop, but some of these guys listen to the crappy Black Keys... But... Not... Depeche Mode... Or anything good...

Of course, I thought this until seeing the comments section on the song's video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=202fjZZO-tI

It's nice to know you ain't alone on something.

I have zero clue about what the massive iPod-like thing on the right is though.

"In my own opinion Skinny Puppy’s album Vivisect VI and the tour that went with it was the pinacle of their career. I saw that live show and have a jacked covered in fake blood to prove it. What you see above is a diagram CEvin Key posted on his Facebook page (link). Hey that's awesome! I'm a big Skinny Puppy fan actually and VIVIsectVI is probably my favorite industrial album of all time, awesome to have an inside look at their notes and doodles. I'm sure the iPod looking thing is just supposed to be a speaker, hah.
