🌆 #16: Ben Spurgin's Legacy

Share Download this podcast

Author Comments

October 13, 2009 was the day that NG lost @ben-spurgin, a prolific and beloved creator known for his wacky games, music and Stick Slayer animations.

More recently, NG user @Jamessimo started working on a sequel to Ben's game Pimp's Quest. In researching Ben's work, he found himself falling down a rabbit hole of Spurgin history, coming out of it a certified "Ben-storian" with a wealth of knowledge to share.

Ten years after Ben's death, let James the Ben-storian (and Will the Very Curious Listener) take you through some Spurgin 101, discuss what made his work so great, and share how his findings have helped further inspire Pimp's Quest 2.

HI - Ben's mom here. I really appreciate this great memorial conversation. Ben knew his big break was just around the corner. He died just before social media exploded. But due to his emotional issues, he might have ended up like Logan Paul or something. I mean, Pee Man? Puh-leez I kept asking him to give me stuff I could share & brag about. I can tell you I've contacted Ben many times thru psychics. He's with me a lot. NOTE - if you do sequels to his stuff, please give it your own name, call it a tribute & keep it separate. HIs chapter is closed. Thanks for loving my son. BTW - the heroin discussion was spot on. Very accurate. As for 2 NG accounts - his games were made with a partner - hence, a separate account.

Will responds:

Hey there, Ben's mom. :) I'm so glad you found this episode and enjoyed it. Ben was clearly a fiercely creative guy and felt right at home here on NG. I hope it brings you joy to know that guys like @Jamessimo continue to be invested in his art and legacy.

I just found out.

I'm devastated.

I CAN'T BELIEVE this old login info still works. I haven't logged in 15 years! Saints' Blessings to Newgrounds for retaining this old account that properly allows me to share my grief!!!

RIP BEN, hope you can see this as some rad 4th-dimensional being on the other side...

Honestly must say I barely remember a thing about Ben, iconic as his name rings, but his legacy... it's nice to hear it'll live on! There was definitely a lot more edginess back then too. Even though I don't appreciate content that's edgy just for the sake of being edgy these days I do miss the times when people could just speak their minds, and not be judged about it. Or rather: everyone could judge everyone. All judgement could be judged just as much. People said and did what they wanted and sometimes that just so happened to be what also needed to done or said. And some people stood at the forefront of that freedom.

At the same time it was a time that bred people who didn't get as offended over the most petty things. An aggressive yet peaceful time of oddly conflicting coexisting views and community...

Gotta mention, regarding the recording: the voice was a bit flaky sometimes. Mic distance very varied, probably. But I love the passion! Would be cool to get some conversation going regarding livecorpse too, or other peeps from the in memoriam pages. That guy had a really sad backstory as well.

Good stuff, and good luck with that project @Jamessimo !

-cd-

cool :D

Thanks so much @willKMR for having me on! Listening back to it I want to emphasize how good of an interviewer Will truly is to wrangle my ramblings into a coherent interview and @ninjamuffin99 for making my garbage audio and loud background noises into a pleasant episode to listen too. A true gem of a podcast and can't wait for many many more episodes to come!

RIP Ben

Will responds:

Thanks James! You were a great guest!
