Carol of the Drum ~ Troisnyx ver. ft. Spadezer

Author Comments

Hey everyone, Troisnyx writing, before I go scoot off for Christmas Vigil Massesโ€”

This is a very deeply personal rendition of the Carol of the Drum, a.k.a. Little Drummer Boy. I added my usual Hymmnos-style flair to this one, and I also drew influence from the many liturgical choir pieces I have come to know and love over the years. The harmonies, as well as lyrics of the intro and Verse 3, are additions penned by yours truly; nearly all of the rest of the lyrics are the originals.

When I was three years old I was drawn to both this carol and the sound of the drum, and my path was set. It has always held the kind of sway over me befitting a calling from above. I sometimes question it, but it always calls me back, as surely and as emphatically as a drum does.

Here, I attempt to sing these lyrics with as much meaning as I can inject into them, and I am aided by @Spadezer when it comes to singing the parts that I cannot reach with my voice. I also play all the drums you hear in this piece. There is no other instrumentation.

I breathed this entire carol like a prayer, writing the additional lyrics in August, recording the drums in September, and having us make moves to record the vocals in November, before finally finishing on 14 December. For reasons that I will go over in the long post about this carol, I gave it a mixdown that made the piece sound like it was playing from an old tape. I could have done more perhaps โ€” but as some of you on Twitter and Discord have found out from me, the current version of FL 20 has been giving me unknown export issues, messing with the pitch, volume, and reverb of individual parts in ways I never told the DAW to do. This was the last and most recent "good" version, so to speak, and I wasn't going to risk tearing my hair apart trying to chase away errors that shouldn't have been there in the first place.

As for my drumming, it is something that makes me vulnerable and gives me great joy. I feel that it is my true song. I hope I can sing this true song a lot more โ€” because to me, unlike what most of us consider a "celestial" sound, the drum is well and truly akin to the sound of heaven.

More on the piece, and my history as a drummer, in this post:

Happy Christmas, and happy holidays. May they be as peaceful as they can be for us all, and may the new year be a lot better than this one.

For reference purposes, The Girl's parts are in regular text, and The Creator's parts are in italics.

Sweet child,

you may wait in silence to play for Me.

In that silence

you hear the beating of your heart.

I placed it deep within you

before you came to be.

Sweet child,

close your eyes and listen to what you hear.

In that darkness

you hear the beating of My Heart.

Chase it,

just like the wise men chase the Star at night.

Keep listening to My Heart.

Keep listening to My Heart.

Come, they told me, pa rum pa pum pum,

a newborn King to see, pa rum pa pum pum;

our finest gifts we'll bring, pa rum pa pum pum,

to lay before the King, pa rum pa pum pum,

rum pa pum pum, rum pa pum pum,

so to honour him, pa rum pa pum pum,

when we come.

Baby Jesu, pa rum pa pum pum,

I am a poor girl too, pa rum pa pum pum;

I have no gift to bring, pa rum pa pum pum,

that's fit to give a king, pa rum pa pum pum,

rum pa pum pum, rum pa pum pum:

shall I play for you, pa rum pa pum pum,

on my drum?

Mary nodded, pa rum pa pum pum!

The ox and lamb kept time, pa rum pa pum pum!

I played my drum for him, pa rum pa pum pum!

I played my best for him, pa rum pa pum pum,

rum pa pum pum, rum pa pum pum!

Now you speak My language of love.

I set you in motion, fill you with fire

and set it to beat the rhythm of love,

the sound of My heart, the rhythm that saves!

Your heart will resound to all who are near,

to all who are far,

to all who would listen deep in their hearts

and meet with Me there.

And in the wind, the roar of the waves,

the call of the earth, the thunder and rain,

My rhythm is beating, ever unceasing,

listen to Me!

The child here before you set to his beat

the earth and the heavens, listen to him!

O for his voice tears through the noise,

cuts through the drum and reaches your heart!

O for his voice bids elements still

and cease their raging, listen to him!

He calls out to you, louder than thunder

rolls in the sky in the middle of the storm!

Do you hear the call of the Lord?

Do you hear the call of the Lord?

Then if you do, answer with all your heart as you beat upon your drum!

Then, he smiled at me, pa rum pa pum pum,

me and my drum.

Sing a new song to the Lord,

sing with your heart, thunder the drum for him!

Sing a new song to the Lord,

sing with your heart, thunder the drum for him!

Sing a new song to the Lord,

sing with your heart, thunder the drum for him!

Sing a new song to the Lord,

sing with your heart, thunder the drum!

Nice. Has a bit of an otherworldly feel to it.

Troisnyx responds:

Thank you. I wanted to capture the heavens opening to that drum being beaten in prayer; I hope I did it okay. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฝ

Your passion and vulnerability are what makes you a truly great artist. Heavy kudos for this one.

Troisnyx responds:

Aaaaaa ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ’– That's incredibly high praise. Thank you so much.

Clearly you've put so much work in to this! It's been a while since I've heard an original Christmas track mixed in with an existing one.

My favorite aspect of this whole thing was how it started easy and quiet then added a little beat to it as it went on. It makes things more interesting

Congrats on this! It's amazing!

Troisnyx responds:

Aaaaa thank you so much <3 I wanted to channel the wonder and longing first before rousing the heart with the drum, so it'd start quiet at first. Spadez really set the tone perfectly with that intro section, I can't thank him enough.

I've never quite heard a version like this before. I can picture you smiling while singing those parts and pounding on that drum, amid the shakiness and breathiness and all those little nuances and quirks that make your performance all the more human. I hope you had a Merry Christmas, and may the upcoming year be merrier.

eh up mate.

LOVE THE VOX. I see someone using reversed reverb :)

Them harmonies. Mwah.

Your singular vocal, too much verb.....it's accentuating your errors. I'd maybe take the shimmer and octave off, i suspect it's valhalla maj verb.

the drum and support vox yes! daaaaaaaaaamn.

I honestly believe your lead vox stops this being a proper 10. If you're going to lead you have to nail every note, no amount of effect work will save you.

The track is polished, everything sounds pro, well comp'd, verb'd and eq'd. Except for your lead, it sounds like you are unable to project.

this is a 5 all day, but that vox needs fixing

Troisnyx responds:

Spot-on about the lead vox, I tend to not project too well when I'm seated down (which is my current recording position). I need to be standing for this sort of thing; it appears my lungs have gone into full chorister mode and are not coming back from that. โ˜บ๏ธ

As for 'verb, nope, it's all software defaults.
