this is really really good! the way the drums fade in as the piano becomes more structured is magical, and i'm consistently surprised and intrigued by the chords you use. the sine lead / wobbly thing that comes in at 1:00 is lovely as well, probably my favorite surprise in the entire song. amazing work (:

vocaloutburst responds:

Thanks for the kind words!! That sine lead was my favorite too ;) Also, your track was INSANELY GOOD, can't wait to see what you come up with for this next round! Best of luck to you and @1f1n1ty!!!

hey dude, mega congratulations on the win!! i really do love this song a lot and i'm proud to have given my all against it because it's so gooood

i love all the lil subtleties because there's this main groove going on, but there's always more stuff under the surface to discover which makes re-listening to it again and again super easy (the style and structure really help with that too)

did you play the piano/elec piano lines or program them into a daw? i ask because they're super groovy and i'd be impressed either way but for different reasons heh

i'm also interested in learning what your inspirations for this kind of stuff might be! i love and and i'd love to listen to more stuff like it because i don't think i've broken into this part of the music world enough

much love dude, great music and i hope you go far in the ngadm!! <3

vocaloutburst responds:

Aww thanks so much dude!!! Your song was such a joy to listen to as well, really sounded like it was a lot of fun to make! (also to your response to my comment, of course I'd love to collab for your "Life Sucks" musical XD)

I did indeed play the piano! I didn't really touch the MIDI for the grand piano but the MIDI for the electric/synthy piano was definitely altered a bit.

Also, my inspirations for this track in particular were kinda from all over the place but the main three artists that I think influenced me the most were these three:

Tennyson
quickly, quickly
Anomalie

Definitely check those three artists out when you have the chance, REALLY insane producing skills from all of them!

Much love to you as well man, like I said before, regardless of the competition, I'm looking forward to your future tracks!!!

I like the relaxed vibe at the beginning and the detuned piano. The rhythm is a little hard to follow at the beginning, and the harmony isn’t much easier at first either, with a lot of jazzy chords in rapid succession. There’s more clarity in the texture when the drums come in at :25, but the mix is still pretty thin. The flow is punctured frequently by sudden transitions, which in a way helped keep the piece engaging, but I also think I lost the sense of direction of the piece after a while. I like the blissful, bouncy mood of the piano and the somewhat moody inflections that occur at times, but I think you could’ve done a lot more with the composition in some regards. The entire piece feels a bit fleeting, not just because it’s short but also because there’s rarely a sense of structural stability anywhere. You have a lot of cool transitions and ideas running across the page, but I wanted to be able to point to a moment of arrival that ties the piece together. Instead, it never really came, leaving this piece feeling unfinished, to be frank. Still, you’ve really got an engrossing mood going here, and the production and sound design are strong as usual. Keep at it, Vocaloutburst! :)

Thanks for the review dude, it really means a lot! I think this was definitely one of my more ambitious tracks to make, especially for this contest. Up until now, I've taken a more video game/orchestral/cinematic approach to my tracks, and this jazzy lofi track is kinda out of left field but I wanted to give it a try and see what happens. I honestly think your review helps the most out of all the comments/critique I've received for this track. I focused mainly on my knowledge of jazz when I was putting this together, but I often get too snared into my own ear for the vast majority of my tracks. I want to get better at stepping away from the production process and attempt to hear the track from a different viewpoint so I can appeal more to the masses. I think with your review, it showed me what others' ears might have gravitated towards and that's usually a hard thing to figure out on my own. I don't just want to make music that I think my friends and people I admire will like, but I also want my music to reach people who I'd never dream of getting to know. Basically, what I'm saying it this, I have to come to terms with the fact that what I think sounds cool isn't always going to resonate with everyone in the same way. Again, really REALLY appreciate these reviews, it means a whole lot to me!

This is an official NGADM '19 Review

Composition:
I'm really digging this jazzy feel you got going on. Super intricate chord work and really compliments the melody you have going for this. You had me hooked in at 0:20, which set a great tone for the rest of the song, and I ate up what you were doing. There was really good moments were it was a steady beat, but every moment had a nice jazzy fresh take going on and led me along for the whole ride. No complaints from me.

Production and Sound Design:
Super clean mixing. Everything fit really nicely and complimented the composition really well. If anything I feel like the piano should be mixed more to the high end, but really it's only a preference thing because it fits great even the way it is. You do a really nice job of managing the energy through the mixing and balancing too

Structure:
Oh man this needs to be longer. Like I mentioned earlier, there's really great dynamics happening with the energy, and it all has really nice flow. But this song is begging to have more progression.

Emotion / Conclusion:
Really light, but fresh style. It's not unfamiliar, but like I've said I can't get enough of this.

Production: 9

Sound Design: 10

Structure: 7

Emotion: 9

vocaloutburst responds:

Thanks a bunch for the review! Definitely wanted to make it a bit longer but I was running out of time, I'll probably (hopefully) extend and finish it sometime soon!

I hope you end up making this longer, its amazing!
