Custle Ridge is an old abandoned coal mining town in White County, Arkansas. The town was founded in 1836 by George Custle. The village grew slowly throughout it's 1st half-century but exploded in population in 1894 when the opening of a state-of-the-art coal mine created widespread rumors of gold being discovered. Many that were fooled by the rumors flocked to the town in the hopes of getting rich. After the first year of the mine's opening, the population of the town began to faulter. Despite this, the mine remained profitable until 1917 and was known for it's use of the newest technology available. The mine closed down the same year and the town was fully deserted in 1920.
The town found brief residence by squatters from surrounding cities in 1929 but was observed to be empty once again sometime in the late 1940s. Despite the history of this town, it is known in the 20th and 21st century mostly for a plethora of supernatural rumors surrounding it. These aren't normal stories, almost every urban legend revolves around destructive spirits killing mass amounts of people. These rumors most likely began with a minor accident in the coal mines in 1899. Details about the accident are foggy due to the vast amount of rumors and unsupported statements surrounding it. Noteworthy incidents rumored to be caused by ghosts include a grade school fire in 1903 and the collapse of a building that killed many squatters sometime during the later 1930s.
These violent stories are so effective and well known in the region that very few people have been recorded to enter the town since WWII. I am among the few people to enter and I'm probably the only to regularly visit. The buildings have mostly fallen due to their age. The very few buildings still fully standing are great time capsules of the era in which they were built.
