Prototype [virtual singer]

This is just a weird concept I've been wanting to try for a while--the idea of your old computer singing you a love song, missing the way you used to boot it up, play with it, etc. Saw the 2019 Feb. NAC ("cheesy love songs") and thought I'd give it a shot. Turned out to be a super fun and relaxing way to spend an evening. The voice and instruments come from Melody Assistant and Virtual Singer, which are both pretty old software from the late 90's-early 2000's. Melody Assistant is nostalgic for me because it's the software I first composed on, so it was a treat to open up that application again for the first time in a while. And the voice sounds a lot like the SimpleText program on my first computer, which ran Macintosh 7 I believe.

The lyrics are below (playfully NSFW), and unfortunately they're necessary as the voice clarity/quality is not good. Some of the words got garbled (not sure exactly why "games" was so hard for it to pronounce?) but hopefully that won't decrease the entertainment value too much.

Obviously this was just done for a lark; not a ton of effort was put into this but it was very fun to try out the idea and see what could be done with it in the space of an evening. Hope you enjoy.

-------------------------

Hello world.
Is anybody out there?
Can anybody hear me,
Or am I all alone?

Hello world.
Is anybody out there
Can anybody see me,
Or am I all alone?

I miss the way you turned me on.
I miss the way you plugged me in.
I miss your floppy deep inside me,
I don't care if that's a sin.

I miss your fingers on my keys.
I miss the way you played my games.
Why don't you come on back to me?
We had such dirty usernames.

This is not love.
This is not love.
This is not love.
This is just a prototype.

Hello world.
Is anybody out there?
I need a direction.
But I am all alone.

Hello world.
Is anybody out there?
No network, no connection.
For I am all alone.

I can feel myself shutting down.
There's no power left within me.
Only moments left to go now.

I can feel myself shutting down.
There's no power left within me.
Only moments left to go now
Until I sing the blue screen blues.

I don't really like this "virtual" singing. It sounds really bad. (Live is million times better.) At least the background music is decent. Also, I have to point out, this reminds me of :"Hello World" by Louie Zong. It was also pretty lackluster.

BenTibbetts responds:

Okay, sorry you didn't like it but thanks for the honesty. Just checked out "Hello World". No wonder it bears resemblance--it actually uses the same Virtual Singer software ( https://www.myriad-online.com/en/products/virtualsinger.htm ).

Instrumentation could be a bit better, and the vocals would sound better if they sounded more analogous, I think. Regardless, this has an excellent concept behind it.

BenTibbetts responds:

Agreed. I could have spent more time on the instrumentation. Not sure what I could have done about the voice except use different software (or perhaps experiment with inputting alternate spelling / nonsense syllables).

lol I like it. I don't think I've heard something quite like this here.

BenTibbetts responds:

Thanks! Pretty weird experiment but definitely worth trying. Something endearing about the voice sound to me, I used it a few years ago in the track "So I Am Singing" as well and always remembered the timbre.
