Count Me In

thanks to 1f1n for letting me submit late because time zones are annoying!!

Ok so this song is like... prog jazz symphonic fusion? Made basically with all MIDI instruments ?????

It was basically an experiment to see how far I could take a single, five-note motif, and I think I ended up in some pretty cool places! A lot of compositional stuff here was heavily inspired by counting—there's a part of the song where there are repeating patterns of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 beats going on all at once! Can you count 'em all????

I like the funky vibe at the beginning and the creative rhythmic elements. That said, it was a bit hard to follow the rhythm at times, especially during moments like the descending scale at :08. Your brass and wind samples are a bit lacking imo, but the crisp mix helps make up for it. The directionality of the piece seems a bit unclear for a while. There are a couple of prolonged transitory moments (like :58-1:16), and also some frantic riffs that seemed off-kilter harmonically (like :48-:50). You also really threw me off with the suddenly soothing section at 1:52. The underlying energy of the piece is great. There are clearly a lot of creative thematic things going on. Full credit for satisfying the bingo requirement (and going above and beyond with it, at that). One of my main worries with this piece is that it’s really hard to stay grounded in the structure because the texture has so many different layers with relatively independent lines. There’s a good amount of repetition overall, of course, given the underlying 5-note riff, but generally it’s the parts that are moving around that riff that define the structural elements of the piece best imo. I didn’t take off too many points for it anyway because it gets a lot easier to observe the cohesive elements of the piece after listening to it 2-3 times. The strongest element of the piece is the mixing imo. Super clean, loud, and clear throughout. I also liked the melodic content, even though I think of this piece as being more rhythmically driven. Keep at it, LE!

haha oh wow I feel liek I'm playing.. any number of nes or sega genesis type games..

loving your use of slap bass man - this has a lot of crazy elements going on - the mastering is pretty damn well perfect. But yeah this definitely sounds like it belongs in an old school videogame.

I love your use of horns as transition - this song does not get boring in the slightest - it changes in all the right moments.

I found the flute was a tad, overpowering though, out of everything else you added, the throatiness of it I felt didn't really fit with the rest of the vibe, and is rather distracting, as it sort of adds another feel to the song.

I want to like the choir too - but I also feel like the realistic feel of the choir also takes away - maybe if the flute and choir had been more old-school sounding - the parts after are kickass though - the midi feel is great, probably shoulda gone with midi-sounding all the way through though, maybe a more basic midi sounding for the flute and choir - although at the end when they come in for short bursts it sounds pretty good.

Overall awesome tune - almost perfect! If you modified the flute and choir parts in the middle it would most likely be perfect - good job Lunacyecho!

4.5 out of 5!

This grooves hard! Pretty cool development on the motif all the way through. I particularly liked the frantic lines in the beginning and ending sections. Production-wise I think you could try adding a bit more reverb as some of the lead instruments sounded a bit dry. Great track!
