Really quirky sound design and rhythmic elements here. The instruments don’t sound very authentic (percussion, flute, etc.), but honestly if this wasn’t labeled as “world” I would be digging it as a big 80s synthwave spinoff. The texture is a little thin at times, and the piece definitely takes a while to develop. The quality of the samples isn’t great - sounds like there are a lot of DAW presets in here - but generally the instruments blend well together. I think the mixing and mastering might need some work, though. At :54, the melodic content is largely buried beneath the arpeggiated synths, and the drums could sound a lot crisper. I’d double-check your equalizer too. It might just be the samples, but something sounds muddy in the texture. Overall, the mood and atmosphere of this piece are my absolute favorite of the entire competition. That said, I think the composition could use some more fleshing out, and the balance of the different instruments is a bit off. I’m a little torn about this piece because there are a lot of sound design and thematic elements that I really like, but I’d like to see you aim for a cleaner production and a bit more directionality in the arrangement (i.e., building on your riffs, not just repeating them). There’s definitely a part of me that wants to give this piece a 9.5/10, though. Just a really unique and refreshing sound. Keep at it, RedMongoose!

I agree with the reviewer below that this whole mix sounds way too muddy, like you threw a blanket over the entire song.

Upon saying that though I do love what is going on under the blanket - those arps are pretty cool too - as was the addition of that little vocal sample. Honestly if you sharpened this up a bit I think itd sound pretty kickass - but mastering is just as important as composition, if not more so imo. To compare it to cooking its the difference between throwing a buncha veggies together vs combining them in a way that all the flavours can be appreciated properly while looking good on a plate.

I give this a 3 out of 5.

This whole track sounds a bit muddy to me so I think it most instruments would benefit from a brighter EQ. Besides that, I was completely immersed in it. What a cool and unexpected piece of music. You had me hypnotized.

RedMongoose responds:

Thank you very much. I do need to work on my mixing, I didn't really do at all for this song, sorry about that, time restraints etc.

Yo, I'd bang this around the hood at max volume. It has a super experimental vibe but I heard a lot of great ideas. Props to teh bingo :D
