Really quirky sound design and rhythmic elements here. The instruments don’t sound very authentic (percussion, flute, etc.), but honestly if this wasn’t labeled as “world” I would be digging it as a big 80s synthwave spinoff. The texture is a little thin at times, and the piece definitely takes a while to develop. The quality of the samples isn’t great - sounds like there are a lot of DAW presets in here - but generally the instruments blend well together. I think the mixing and mastering might need some work, though. At :54, the melodic content is largely buried beneath the arpeggiated synths, and the drums could sound a lot crisper. I’d double-check your equalizer too. It might just be the samples, but something sounds muddy in the texture. Overall, the mood and atmosphere of this piece are my absolute favorite of the entire competition. That said, I think the composition could use some more fleshing out, and the balance of the different instruments is a bit off. I’m a little torn about this piece because there are a lot of sound design and thematic elements that I really like, but I’d like to see you aim for a cleaner production and a bit more directionality in the arrangement (i.e., building on your riffs, not just repeating them). There’s definitely a part of me that wants to give this piece a 9.5/10, though. Just a really unique and refreshing sound. Keep at it, RedMongoose!
