My entry for the Audio Portal Bingo contest. (went with C4)

I've been checking out a lot of '90s electronic recently and been having drum&bass on my mind

Pretty haunting riff at the beginning, even if the choir doesn’t sound very authentic. The drum work is pretty admirable. The rhythm is really creative, and the heavy use of the ride cymbal was a nice touch. The slap bass serves as an additional quirk to the texture. Really eclectic sound design here. The piece takes a while to develop harmonically, though, and I was a little thrown off when the choir suddenly dropped out at :52. After a while, I didn’t really understand where the piece was going very well. There’s very little harmonic depth here, and while the sound design and rhythmic content are good, they don’t quite make up for the lack-luster compositional elements. Even the ending felt rushed. Overall, I’d say there are a lot of fun riffs and patterns, but I’d like to see you do more with them from an overarching structural standpoint. Keep at it, MoonLordress!

haha thats a very midi-sounding choir at the beginning, but it has its own charm :P

it's a cool little beat, I feel like the levels aren't quite intense enough for a DnB song though. This song feels like something you'd hear in a star ocean game though. It's cool I just find it lacks a lot of diversity, a good backing song but it lacks the intensity and diversity to really stand out much on its own imo. I do like your little drum soloesque ending though.

I give this a 3.5 out of 5.

-shawn (Chronamut)-

Really like the old school voice samples at the beginning. You got me feeling Chrono Trigger in the first section. The drums and rhythm sound ridiculously good. It would be interesting to see the session and understand your writing process as I'd like to write more frantic rhythms like those. If I had any criticism it would be that the bass phrase sounds a bit thin and the track could be mastered to sound louder. Other than that, great track, and again, fantastic rhythms.

I'm giving you bonus vibes for the extra long title. Cool syncopated rhythms.

Which artists exactly are you listening to for these inspirations? When I think of the 90's jungle scene the first peeps that really comes to mind are Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Autechre. Then you had more of the rave scene with artists coming from the Moving Shadow label. Artists like Hive, Gridlok, timecode. There was some great stuff that's easily forgotten about. Hell I didn't learn about any of those peeps until college.

Sorry I'm gushing a bit. Reiteration, who is currently influencing you??

MoonLordress responds:

Aphex Twin is a god, but I'd say this track reminds me more of someone like Goldie... I'm still dipping into d'n'b/'90s electronica, this is actually my first attempt at something like that. Thank you btw!
