Lighting Another

Four and a half minute metal jam recorded for the NGAP Bingo Contest. Aiming for Row 1, I tried to include guitars, 16th note runs, the ride cymbal, a tempo change, and riffs featuring the G♭ major scale. Rock on!

Opened eyes' wretched hive,
Individual selfish lie,
Open minds realize,
Adversity brings us life,
Break the form, drop the axe,
Forsake not the sworn maniacs,
Drive or die, fall or fly,
Idolize an elder's shattered sky

The engine of envy,
Contracts all around her,
Consumed in a frenzy,
They'll all understand what it feels like to suffer,
The sins of our fathers,
The plight of our brothers,
You're not on your own, we're not all alone,
A flame loses nothing by lighting another

I like the powerful guitars and frantic riffs. The vocals are pretty haunting, if hard to discern solely from listening to the piece. The production quality is generally good, although there were times when I thought the drums could be a tad louder, especially during the vocal sections. The lyrics themselves are also quite good. It seems like the tone of the content is rather different between the two verses, at least from reading it. Compositionally, the piece is a tad repetitive and also lacking on melodic content. The piece’s constant sense of energy and drive comes at the expense of structural variety and dynamic contrast. I understand that this is a metal song, but I think it’s hard to maximize the emotional appeal of a track if the level of emotion is so similar throughout. Overall, though, electrifying piece. The guitar work is really strong, and the vocal content is quite memorable. Keep at it, TSRBand!

Thanks so much for the detailed review :) Really glad you liked it overall, and your tips are always invaluable!

hmm.. hihats weren't my fave choice.. or at least those specific hihats.

But the heavy metal vibe I am definitely digging. Imo those vocals could be a bit louder in the mix, they are being drowned out just a bit, but the spread of the guitars is just awesome. The bass imo could be a bit more intense too - it's nice and spread out though, but I feel like your percussion is also being drowned out too. Some proper mastering would really bring a lot of this mix out, but I feel as it is there is just too much canceling each other out levels wise.

Upon saying that though, what IS there is pretty much awesome - if you can rework it to bring a lot of the elements out it would be really kickass - work on your mastering man! ;)

I give this a 3 out of 5 just because of the mastering issues.

Thanks for the advice! Looking forward to revisiting those levels with your tips in mind :)

I agree that this could use a little less compression as this isn't the super modern/refined type of metal. The vocals also sound a bit drowned in the mix. I feel at least in the choir the should be a bit brighter/louder/in your face. Besides that, it sounds great. Pretty cool track and guitar playing, both rhythm and lead. May I ask what that guitar tone is?

TSRBand responds:

Thanks for the review! I use Bias FX from Positive Grid for guitar tones :)

Yo, this is some tight metal. Granted I gotta agree with Czy on the highs. The mix sounds super thin. I love throat vocals though. All the writing is good. Drum rhythms and guitar riffs are on point. I'm guessing there is some sort of fidelity FX on those vocals that are tearing up the spectrum? Dunno. That's really the only problem I got. Everything else sounds great love :)

TSRBand responds:

Thanks for the kind words! I do have a lot to learn about performing and mixing vocals and hope to keep improving :)

I'm not a huge fan of the growly cartoon monster-ish vocals. Also, the sound seems to be kinda overcompressed. On the other hand, the riffs are great.

TSRBand responds:

Thanks for tuning in!
