I recently attended my very first game jam this weekend, which was quite a fun experience! Being forced to work quickly within the 30-hour timeframe we were given was definitely something I needed, because I've spent a lot of time shelving and abandoning music projects. Even with a current bigger project I'm working on, I've been going off and on with my work on it. This was a much-needed mood booster!

The theme and sub-theme were breakfast and pancakes respectively - I had to come in about an hour after the jam had started, so the team's idea was already set at a fighting game around sumo pancakes. The sound designer and I thought it would be fun to play up the ridiculousness by going really straight-faced with the music and goofy with the sound effects. Unfortunately, the build at the end wasn't able to incorporate the audio, but it still won the jam - kudos to the team! Hopefully they'll bring it back for the spring showcase!

This is the menu music for the game, incorporating some basic Japanese musical staples that everyone's come to know - taiko and shamisen. I realized with this jam that I don't have many Japanese software instruments, so I had to improvise quite a bit. While I'm satisfied with the jam results, I'd definitely go back and make some changes to the soundtrack if we revisited the project. I'm not totally happy with the arrangements or mixing, but they were functional and ready for the game, which was my main goal for a first game jam. I'll definitely be doing another one of these!
