--- === NGADM Round 1 Review === ---
I found the intro had a lot of impact! Sadly the rest, in comparison, doesn't quite reach the same height. The intro reminds me a little of the intro to Mass Effect 3 when all the ships are blowing up around you as the Reapers kill everyone. The instruments sound good and are well mixed so it's warm and coherent.

The composition is interesting even if it relies on the very "trailer" typical sound, you've used it to make something different. I found myself getting a little... bored?... in the middle, leading up to the final buildup.

Tells a story of struggle, coherent atmosphere but sadly I wasn't drawn in. Maybe it's a bit long for something so consistently high energy. It could have benefited from a leading melody at times too. To me, it was more background music.

Scores are weighted so that comp and prod are 75% of the score:
Composition: 8
Production: 8
Enjoyment, atmosphere, replay and all the other odd stuff: 6

AceMantra responds:

Hey! Thank you for your time!

I know what you mean about it not having much impact. The intro is definitely where I put most of my creative juices into, and if time was no obstacle, I would have done the rest very differently.

Well, I'm going out on a bang with my round 1 reviews. This is really good, and probably on par with the other cinematic piece I heard in this round. I especially like how there's so much going on in terms of the music, and how every part is so interpretive. Plus, it almost sounds like an actual orchestra rather than a bunch of VSTs, which is a plus on my end.

There's two general issues I have with the piece, first being the sounds. I like the general sounds that are on, but there's some that just sound weird in this (for example, the reverse cymbal at the beginning). I just feel that some of them need to be changed out or removed altogether. Second, the volume. I feel that this is a little too soft, and that you can raise the volume up a bit. After all, the big dramatic moments, in order to be dramatic, need to be brought out and in the listener's face in order to get them to feel the tension going on.

Overall, a great piece. In my opinion, this can really work in NGADM. Great job to you, and good luck to you and everyone else in NGADM :D

The reverse crash at the beginning felt a bit forceful compared with the calming mood of the rest of the piece. Beautiful sound design and melodies, though, even if the piano melody sounded a tad square rhythmically. I like the ongoing sense of directionality in the texture until 1:06. The stop-start transition has a nice sense of drama about it, but I still thought it was a bit abrupt. Nice work with the progression otherwise. You know how to give the composition of your tracks an ebb and flow really well. The final climactic section at around 2:35 is super great. I think the lower string line could've come through the mix a little clearer at 2:40, but otherwise I didn't notice any huge problems with the mastering here. My biggest compositional complaint is that there's a lot of transitory/build-up content without much cathartic/emotional height content. Perhaps that's merely typical of cinematic tracks, though. Overall really strong work here! You really sold the drama with this one. Good luck in the ADM, AceMantra. ^_^

AceMantra responds:

Thanks for the input and kind words, TL! I totally agree with all of your points. I meant to make the transitions a little smoother, but I ran out of time as usual. But it's finished and that's what matters.

Thanks again, and good luck to you as well. :)

I think this piece has a very solid start that evokes a lot of emotion and clearly tells a story, but I think that the execution in the second half is not as good. The instrumentation is great, and I especially like the choir. I feel like some of the drum patterns are out of sync or I just can't make sense of their rhythms at times. When the sub bass fx was reused at 2:33, it felt way too cheesy. Anyway, I enjoyed the beginning but I found myself getting distracted by the things I mentioned above during much of the second half.

AceMantra responds:

Hey! Thanks for leaving your thoughts! :)
Something went wrong during the exporting process that caused the drums to fall out of sync. I thought I had less time than I did, but now I actually have a chance to address some of the parts that make me cringe (all of it).

Great!? Although it's not my style I liked it, I'm just dedicated to producing electronic music and I still have a lot to improve ... I'm following you but I also expect it in return ;)
