EDIT 2: Lossless downloads are up! https://evilgrapezmusic.bandcamp.com/track/start-up
Super-duper ultra mega sorry for the rushed mixdown! I literally just, JUST finished mixing it (10:05 PM on the night before Pixel Day) and I only got around to starting to work on my submission at all a few days earlier. Haha...oops.
But hey, happy Pixel Day! I've been looking forward to this day all year (quite literally) and as per usual, I've kept my ongoing tradition of releasing a chiptune/EDM hybrid track today!
This is also a very special song, as it finally marks the start of my "new sound." I've been working for several months on just improving at everything and I'm (hopefully) more tolerable now. I mean, it's still no Porter Robinson, but it's something, right?
Although this is a bit rushed I'm still pretty proud of it and I really hope you like it! I've actually had the melody and chords lying around for a while, unused, but I'm glad I got to use them here.
Anyway, I gotta run and there's not much to say, so enjoy, and Happy Pixel Day!

Ah, thank you so much! The ending was a last minute addition. The main synth was the only one playing and it was just the same synth in the second breakdown in the original file. All I did was have it go through an amp and add bitcrush, and then add those drums. I would've probably made the ending a little longer, but I didn't want to take the time because it was already kind of late at night and I had to have this finished by the morning. I appreciate the comment, though!
Thanks for your comment on the melody. I consider it one of my best. :)
Hella fucking nice dude, congrats on the front page too. :D
The song gives a feeling of watching an amazing start to an adventure. Amazing rhythm and just kept getting better and better.
Thank you so much!
One of the song's inspirations was actually the feeling of getting a new game/game console. That's why it's called "Start Up." I'll take the comment "watching an amazing start to an adventure" as a compliment!
Happy Pixel Day!
I'm digging it! Totally agree with littlbox, and I love the fusion elements. Fantastic work keeping it interesting all the way throughout; really reminds me of Sonic Mania. Keep it up!
It's kind of funny, last year someone else commented that my Pixel Day song sounded like Sonic. I haven't even played Mania.
Thank you very much, though!
I really love the constant experimentation in this song. There's never a dull moment in the whole piece, and though it likes to wander, it comes right back to where it began. Great job! Happy Pixel Day!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it. I've been trying to get better at keeping songs interesting throughout and I'm glad to hear I did it here! Happy Pixel Day to you too. :)
Happy Pixel Day!
Man, first off, your bass work here is exemplary. Super smooth and just plain tasty. Lots of really sweet retro goodness to be had here, and these Chip/EDM hybrids of yours just keep getting better and better. Kicks are nice and punchy, just how I like 'em. Your instrumental palette is vivid, and they all mesh well.
There's a lot of rich harmony going on through much of the track, and the beats are tremendous. Loving those well-placed key changes, too. I'm not usually a big fan of fade-outs, but you've made a really cool one here that feels very genre-appropriate. Very nicely done!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate your compliment on the bass. I've been learning how to make better bass rhythms since I started actually playing the instrument, and I'm quite happy with how it turned out. I'm glad the key changes were okay, too!
Yeah, I'm not the biggest fan of fadeouts either, but I liked this one too much to not include it.
I really appreciate all your comments here. Thank you so much for the review! Happy Pixel Day, and good luck!
