NGAUC 2k17 Knockout submission (underdog)

All instruments are real except for the tambourine VST and "Crystal" VST I used from my DAW.

The subject matter of the piece pretty much entails the struggle of maintaining positivity in such a fucked world. Depression and cynicism end up being the "temptress" that creeps up and yearns for our attention, and those struggling to be happy may find that temptress to be maddening at times. Though, this metaphor can be applied to most every human struggle, I feel. The feeling of wanting an easier way out when things get rough, even if that easier way out is harmful and not the most beneficial.

LYRICS:
Feeling the way that I do, seeing the things that I see
I wonder what has kept me from humanity's vices
With a temptress at my door, I do nothing but ignore her cries
For she fills me with her lies
And begs me to take my life
Sharpening her shiny knife

I barricade my door (Close my door)
She does nothing but implore (don't implore)
For I haven't been myself as of lately
She knows of an easier way (an easier way)
I tell her to go away (please go away), please leave
For she gives me no reprieve
Not a moment for me to breathe
The fuck does she hope to receive?
I yell it again, "Please fucking leave!"

I admit this situation is quite pathetic
Don't expect a single soul to remain sympathetic
It's a fact of life, a rat in the attic
The temptress assumes her deceitful position

Reading the things that I read, hearing the things that I hear
My mind can't help but wander through a brain left asunder
The temptress still remains, she's driving me insane, oh god
I beg her to go away
She tells me she's here to stay
Forever she will remain
I will take her to the grave
I know that she's here to stay

You have a wonderful voice! Much cleaner than I could do it!

Now, I almost feel that this needs a bit of compression overall, and your low end sounds empty (though I'm listening on computer speakers at the moment). If you've got some bass going on in there, it's completely left out on less bass-rich speakers. Try boosting mids of your bass to fill out the soundscape.

But it's so nice to hear someone playing old-style. Reminds me of 50's sock-hop tunes! Very nice!

I definitely see what you're saying about the bass tones. I boosted the mids excessively to no avail. I think the tone itself is inherently bad, I may toy with it some more and reupload if I get something good going. As far as my influences go, I pull a lot from 80s post-punk and dream pop a la the Smiths or Cocteau Twins, but I do listen to a lot of old school pop like the Beach Boys and the likes, so I guess it makes a wierd Gothicy yet poppy combo, haha. Glad you enjoyed it though.
