AIM - Reunion

Author Comments

JJColours's wonderful artwork inspired this piece. I hope you enjoy it. Here is a link to her work!

This picture made me feel a whole lot of things which I spoke to her about in a message:

"It makes me feel happy and sad and longing at the same time...almost like I miss someone who's sitting right beside me. It feels as if there is a reunion taking place after an endless separation from two old souls (siblings perhaps?) that have been trying to find one another for millennia. Your picture is painted moments after the end of that long journey, but it still feels as if things won't be the same as they were before, as the one fishy is ethereal and ghost-like and possibly unable to stay in the mortal realm. Perhaps this reunion is only for a few moments before astronaut fishy can finally let go and let his friend fish's spirit rest. On the other hand, the artwork is so playful which makes it feel so genuine and not in any way sappy"

I now think that that is a parent fish, and not a sibling fish. I love this picture. Hopefully my piece did it justice.

A very interesting take on the source material. Now, I feel the bass could certainly use more presence to match the intensity of the lead, which could actually be brought down a little. This reminds me of music from Resonance of Fate -- in the initial town you start out in. Sort of dreamy but down to earth and comfortable. Nice work!

Thank you so much for your response and criticism! RealFaction said the same and after listening again, I 100% agree. I will make those adjustments after the AIM judging is over and replace the file :) Feel a bit frustrated because it was the other way around just before uploading (bass too loud, lead little too soft) and I clearly overcompensated. Thank you again! :) Really appreciate you taking the time to write that.

Thanks! :)

This kind of reminds me of Phantasy Star Online music a little, which I love. But there's parts that feel there's one element missing. The bass needs to be more present in the mix than it currently is, it's not strong enough to show in the mix as it could. Interesting interpretation of the picture. Very original melodic piece, I like it. I feel the hihat could have a little more reverb on it. I fele the mix needs to be filled up a little more by something missing, another layer of something.

Other than all that, great job.

Thanks, I appreciate the review hugely. I agree with what you had to say. I really struggled with the arrangement and mix of this in general and also feel like there's a little bit missing. Funnily enough, I previously had the bass much too loud, so I possibly over-compensated and turned it too low in my final mix. Perhaps in a few months I'll listen to it again and it'll seem obvious. Thanks for listening, Mr RealFaction and for facilitating this great competition!

Man, this is amazing. Good job! it's like your creations have a life of their own. what a relaxing thought.

the art is also beautiful, triggers emotions, though I don't know why.

My interpretation of it would be of feeling alienated from your former/future self

McGorilla42 responds:

Thanks, Yardood! :)
