I love the spookiness. Not conventional spookiness, almost a medieval or carnival spookiness. Something from the carnival level in a video game. You clearly have a grasp on mixing and playing as everything flows together in a gorgeous way. You can't tell where one sounds ends and the other begins. However, and while you may be trying for a specific vibe, I am not a fan of your drum sounds. They just sound too dry or tired. An acoustic kit or a more current sounding EDM kit (yours sounds a bit like an old happy hardcore kit) and we'd be in for a winner!
I can definitely see the carnival visual! It reminds me of the carnival song from Super Mario 64 :D
I actually don't listen to much music of this genre; my main inspiration was "Dance with the Devil" by Immortal Technique. And a friend introduced me to an Organ plugin shortly before I began this project, so I decided to throw it in, and it ultimately became the primary melodic element.
I agree with your criticism. I overlooked the drums because I became accustomed to them after listening to this on loop for a while. And I should start collecting better drum samples, because these are from FL Studio's basic drum kits.
Thank you for the review!
not digging the choice of kick sample (something more acoustic sounding and less EDM-like would've been better imo), but the overall vibe is pretty nice.
there's actually a whole lot of music theory going on here - i think you'd really like delving into jazz theory. some of the discordant parts definitely work better than others, there's definitely a big risk to writing something that's in many ways rooted in genre conventions (mainly the drums) but then also flips between concordance and discordance in a "purposefully" thoughtless way. the discordant passages that do work are really interesting to listen to tho (e.g. 1:16-1:22).
also the overall dynamics are pretty much for the whole 4 minutes which makes the discordant writing really hard to listen to - i had to tap out at 2 minutes and have a break lol
i applaud your efforts to move out of your comfort zone, keep it up.
I thought the same about the kick sample in the beginning of development, but I think I became deaf to my work after listening to it on loop for a while, so I stopped noticing that the kick sounds odd.
I hope this doesn't sound strange, but I get an extremely pleasurable feeling from well-executed discordance and dissonance, even with a lack of contrast. I'm sorry to hear that you had to take a break from it though! I'll keep that in mind next time I use this style again. I think you're right about me potentially liking jazz theory; I'm in the early stages of learning piano, but I've already began playing around with scales and chords that are foreign to me.
Thank you for the review! It's rare for people on this website to give a low score to increase the impact of their critique, but I can appreciate it!
im so glad i did not have any substance influenced me tonight (not yet), but it would be hell of a trip to listen to this while high. it's that good.
congrats for the frontpage.
I'm really curious to know what that experience would be like =]
I'm glad you like it that much, thank you!
Haha, don't mind the score on this one! I really don't get why, but you're apparently the victim of a zero-bomb raid xD
As you know, I already said I liked this, and obviously someone decided it was worth a front page feature :D
I guess maybe people didn't like the style? But in all honesty, I find it to be very refreshing. It still has some very interesting melodies, harmonies, rhythms, structure, progression, and all that. The atmospehre is really cool, and the blend of instruments gives this a pretty unique sound. I'm sure it could be mixed to be just a bit less muddy, but I don't really mind, as I can discern everything if I listen closely.
Really, I love this style. Nothing much else to say, other than good work, and keep it up!
I don't think someone disliked this song in particular that much, because as you mentioned, multiple songs of mine were zero-bombed. This song was probably zero-bombed a second time due to groupthink.
It's nice to hear that one of my songs can sound refreshing! Only a few years ago, multiple people used to call my songs generic and bland.
I agree that the mix could be better, but I did what I could with my knowledge. And anyway, I want it to sound slightly muddy, just with the piano being slightly easier to discern.
Thank you for the review!
Please contact me if you would like to use this in a project. We can discuss the details.
