I believe this is the longest song I ever composed. It's so hard to believe that I did all this in fl studio's piano roll. If you're considering buying high quality instruments to improve your music quality, you should definitely do it!

In the description of my last song, I warned you that I would be uploading generic, major-scale piano songs while I experiment with my new plug ins :D Well, this isn't super generic; this type of chord progression would never be used in pop music. I took chords from other keys.

I was mainly inspired by this song, even though my song doesn't sound similar: http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/720138

It is a taaaaad "generic major-scale piano" in my opinion. I feel like some of the melodies are just a bit too planar. I don't know if another type of scale would've fit into the song better than this but major scales on a piano are just one of my pet peeves. However you do have a good sense as to what direction the melody should be going. It never feels like it meanders, it always has a destination and always has a purpose, which is not an easy thing to do so kudos for that.

The chords are well done. As with the melody, it has a destination and it makes a point of getting there, whether is ascending or descending, each chord feels like it belongs and there's very little repetition, which is something I admire greatly about classical music. Sounds to me like there's a key change or an accidental in there every now and again which is always cool to hear.

I have mixed feelings about the plug-in itself. Sometimes the velocity/attack and delay sounds a wee bit off. I suppose that's just the nature of recording through MIDI. Sounds a bit like the chords around the 1:40 mark are getting cut off prematurely by a millisecond or two. I reckon that's something that you'll be grow accustomed to as you experiment more with the plug-ins you're using. I feel it nearly has a Rhodes-esque quality to some of the lower tones which is pretty cool.

Overall I think this is a well constructed composition with lots of factors to listen to but I would've liked it more if the key was a bit more exotic. Good work!

(Also I noticed you uploaded this at 4:20pm. Nice one, my dude)

Thanks for the long, in depth review!

Yeah, this song does lean toward the side of a typical major-scale piano composition. This is almost as generic as the "study" music you find on youtube that gets millions of views. I certainly could have done more with the melodies, but I'm glad that at least the entire melodic content of the song seems purposeful.

I also love the sound of the borrowed chords :D I also used a diminished chord at some points, although that's part of the major scale.

I'm glad that someone commented on the plugin itself. Because I haven't played a real piano before, I don't know what it's actually supposed to sound like. Sure, I can listen to an infinite number of piano songs on the internet, but they've all been mixed and altered. As I continue composing with it, I'll hopefully learn how to add realism.

Thanks again for the review!

Also, I don't know what the significance of 4:20 is (can you tell me in a pm?)

Cheerful track with bittersweet tone. Really enjoyed this. Well done.

Everratic responds:

Thank you. i would describe it the same way :D

I just wanted to say that I really, really enjoyed this. Your chords progressions, and the progression of the song in genereal were lovely! The main melody, and the main chord progression is really effective. The instruments all have a wonderful sound as well. As I've told you before, you seem to have a really good sense for what makes an effective melody!
The dynamics are nice too. I think you managed to figure out what makes the piano sound good, fairly quickly! The velocities are fairly stable for this song, but honestly I feel that fits quite well. In later, more dramatic songs, you might want to experiment with having more silent parts, and some really impactful loud parts. That would've ruined this song though! It wasn't a criticism, just an idea.
The strings add some of that impact already.

I just wanted to mention, some of the melodies and chords you borrowed from different keys were especially to my taste. Unexpected sounds that sound lovely, give even more effect to a nice theme.
You also aren't afraid to use bits of silence at points, and you varied the left hand arrangements. You seem to be aware of, and have lots of useful compositional and arrangement tools at your disposal ;)

The piano playing sounds fairly real, too, aside from the fact that certain dynamics are a bit too similar. Don't worry though! It's quite subtle. As a pianist, it's just easier for me to notice :D

Ehh, I ended up blabbering again :V
I lost my train of thought ^ ^

Either way, I can hear a few similarities to my style of creating melodies/arrangements (especially in how varied this is; just the right amount of repetition)! It's super cool if my piece was able to inspire this in some way :D
Certain parts of this piece remind me of tracks from OSTs I really enjoy (just in style). The strings were used quite effectively here too.

It's also nice to see how avidly you've been using the new instruments since getting them. You're learning to use them super quickly too! As I suspected, your production value increased quite a lot with the addition of these libraries :)

Anyway, it's time for me to go to sleep. This is a great track, keep it up! I'm looking forward to hearing what you create next ^ ^

You were right, this is a very short review :O

" In later, more dramatic songs, you might want to experiment with having more silent parts, and some really impactful loud parts."

I'll definitely try this. I want to create a piano composition with a multitude of strong emotions.

"I just wanted to mention, some of the melodies and chords you borrowed from different keys were especially to my taste. Unexpected sounds that sound lovely, give even more effect to a nice theme. "

I'm glad appeals to your taste! I was browsing youtube yesterday while procrastinating, and youtube's algorithm recommended a piano tutorial video about borrowing chords from other keys. That's likely where I got the idea from for this song.

"The piano playing sounds fairly real, too, aside from the fact that certain dynamics are a bit too similar. Don't worry though! It's quite subtle. As a pianist, it's just easier for me to notice :D"

Thanks for pointing this out. I think I notice it too. It's especially noticeable during the part where four chords are played per bar.

Yeah, I think your arrangement style influenced me more than anything else.

I can't recognize any OSTs while listening to this track. Maybe you can tell me more about it another time, because I'm interesting in listening to them :)

Thank you for the review!
