I can see why this is your best of 2016. Fast, frenetic, and driving. Only thing that brought me back to earth was the harmonic progression at 1:11. Top note sounds ... strange. I'd have written it a semitone higher. What I wouldn't give for the midi file off this one!

Oh...maybe you should go about remixing Sonic 1's SBZ from the mega drive :P
You could even do a few other tweaks and slides ;-)
Audacity can be a bit tricky to get the sounds just right with some of those game's tracks to be honest...hell..maybe you should remix some of the Sega CD's Silpheed tracks as well in this format, especially stage 1 and 8 ^_^

I was actually aiming for those darker VGMs when I played this on the piano. But I also wanted to emulate the style of melodic death metal. Listen to Cathode Ray Sunshine by Dark Tranquility and Twilight of the Thunder God by Amon Amarth and you'll see where I'm coming from.
As for the soundtracks you mentioned, I can't say I'm familiar with any games on SEGA CD, except maybe Sonic CD, which I'm not particularly fond of, though a couple of tracks stand out. I'll check it out, though.
