Instrumental Rock

Rated 4 / 5 stars

I like the ominous mood at the beginning. The instrumentation is also pretty cool. It makes the piece seem very apprehensive and mysterious. I thought the panning was a little over-the-top. It’s usually a good idea to keep the core riffs of the piece in the center, and the guitar at :32 was panned really far to the side. I liked the melody at 1:05, but I think the pacing of this piece is a little slow, and the structure seems a little square and overly controlled. This piece has a ton of underlying tension, but it seems to be resolved by the end, which is a huge plus that gives this piece a sense of catharsis. I also thought the drums could’ve been a bit stronger, especially the snare. The snare should usually be the loudest instrument in the mix, and this is no exception. I’d suggest some compression if it’s possible in whatever platform you’re using. Right when the piece seemed to be reaching a climax, you break up the texture a lot, and I thought the silence at 2:45 was a bit excessive. The tempo of the piece feels very slow. I did like the gradual climax going into the very last cadence, though. Overall, it’s a cool piece. I definitely like the overarching structure (and I’m a huge stickler about structure). Nice use of melody and harmony too. Keep up the good work!
