Sixth Extinction

I made this song for the ngmt 15 contest. Round 3's theme was a polluted sky, and I interpreted it as a mass extinction.

Please listen to this with headphones. Some instruments will be silent on your computer speakers.

The scale changes three times in this track (although the used notes remain the same), and I used some atonal notes. For the purpose of variation, the tempo changes at the last part from 150 to 140.

The thunder and rain effects are from: www.freesfx.co.uk
The other sound effects are from vsts or they are samples that have excessive reverb and delay.

I'm very pleased with the mixing this time. Everything sounds as I intended it to sound. Maybe the leads could sound wider, but I don't know how to do that without adding detune. Even though the bass instrument only plays during two parts of the song, there is a pad with low frequencies that fills the gap throughout the rest of the song. The bass instrument is one of the last things I added, actually.

Woah. I love the FX and percussion. It sounds very ethnic, tribal, and spooky. The synth that's sort of puttering on top of the mix (at least frequency-wise) at :40 was not my favorite, but you definitely did a great job of establishing the mood here with most of these instruments. One of my favorites was probably the single, detuned hit at 1:28 (and other places), as well as the rabid bird-sounding thing at 1:40. The riser at 1:55 is awesome, and overall I just love the structure and progression of this piece. Something about 2:12 sounded really off, like it was in a different key than the melody on top of the already dissonant atmosphere, but after a couple listens I actually grew to love that part a lot. The mixing here is top-notch, btw. If I had to complain about something, it'd probably be the ending. It came on a bit suddenly IMO. Overall, though, this is easily in my top 5 favorite tracks of yours. Hope I'll see you around the Grounds soon, BO. ;D

I agree about the synth. I should have spent more time choosing the synths but I don't enjoy focusing on aspect of a song for a long period of time. The detuned hit is just a percussion sample with some effects on it. The bird sounding thing is a preset (I think you have it too, but I can't remember the name). I made this song about a month ago, but I think I intentionally played the same melody during two different keys. I agree that the ending is sudden; however, I think it does a good job at reflecting the title of the track. I could have made the build up to the ending better though. Thank you for the review!
