Initially I set out to make samurai stand-off boss battle, but then decided to go a little deeper with the story.
The title Ultimate Rift emerged from the idea of a last battle battle between an apprentice and his master. A master that has turned evil, and the apprentice has no choice but to try and stop his mentor. Because of this I did not want to make it overly percussive, but also try to incorporate more sad emotion with melody, symbolizing the apprentice's emotional struggle with having to fight someone he has looked up to as a father figure.
