Yay more music! This is an arrangement of the Snake Eater theme from Metal Gear Solid 3, for the Smash Bros arrangement album expansion Harmony of Heroes: Final Smash. If you enjoyed this, there's plenty more where that came from in the expansion, including Mario, Megaman, Sonic, Zelda, etc.

Right, so first off, the very talented singers you're hearing are Stina Nyman (main vocals) and Jennifer Petersson (backing vocals). I can't thank them enough for their incredible vocal work. I had an absolute disaster of a time mixing this track, though! I suck working with vocals.

This uses East/West Symphonic Orchestra Silver, Stormdrum 2, Hollywood Strings Gold, Hollywood Brass Gold, Pianos Gold, Omnisphere, Embertone Jubal Flute, EZdrummer and Virtual Guitarist. Most of the arrangement was figured out by ear, with some references to an online MIDI file. Look out for nods to the Calling to the Night theme from Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops and the Metal Gear Solid 4 main theme!

Let it be stressed that the original track, Snake Eater, is among my favourite video game music ever. It's an incredible piece of music for an incredible game, and I put myself under quite a bit of stress to make sure I do it justice. I wasn't sure how exactly to approach it, but decided to take a serious, super dynamic/climactic approach, similar to the original, and with heavy James Bond influences (since Metal Gear has lots of nods towards James Bond throughout the series). Thanks for listening, and be sure to let me know what you think.

Lyrics:

What a thrill
With darkness and silence through the night
What a thrill
I'm searching and I'll melt into you
What a fear in my heart
But you're so supreme!

I give my life
Not for honor, but for you
(Snake Eater)
In my time there'll be no one else
Crime, it's the way I fly to you
(Snake Eater)
I'm still in a dream
Snake Eater!

Someday you go through the rain
And someday you feed on a tree frog
This ordeal, the trial to survive
For the day we see new light!

I give my life
Not for honor, but for you
(Snake Eater)
In my time there'll be no one else
Crime, it's the way I fly to you
(Snake Eater)
I'm still in a dream
Snake Eater!
I'm still in a dream
Snake Eater!

You mentioned your difficulty mixing vocals, but I feel like you did so in a way that compliments the track. They could be a few dB louder, but that may just be my own preference -- and maybe a little bit more of the 8k range on the EQ. It sounds phenomenal otherwise.

Your synthwork is perfect, except for the obvious synth bass. Maybe work a little bit more on modulation so the attack doesn't seem so droll. Other than that, stunning work. I know it must have taken some time. Great tools help though, of course.

Stellar work as always, Step. Just don't be afraid to crank up those vocals a bit more, so the instrumental doesn't overshadow them. Background vocals were implemented perfectly, I must say.

Keep up the great work, and thanks for the request!

Step responds:

You are probably entirely correct on those vocals. They could've been louder, especially in certain sections like "there'll be no one else". When I listen back to this I always wish I'd pumped them up a bit more.

Synth bass could definitely use more modulation, if not attack then maybe some filter effect perhaps. It does get kinda monotonous. I was originally going for a more James-Bond-esque kind of bass, but I don't really have the right kind of VSTs for that, so I had to settle with a synth bass.

Super glad you like this. Thanks a lot for this review and for reviewing all the others I pointed you towards!

Musically it's a very balanced piece. I'm thoroughly enjoy how you have the music's kind of going to miss you and you have music on your page do you have the different musicians or musical instruments in the background its gorgeously done , I reiterate myself it's a glorious push and shove kind of works not trying to be a pissing match but your accident in the style and I feel that instrument and what it can do that piece of music is its very beautiful. with that said sounds like you're using some trombones maybe some trumpets in with a little brass in the back that just adds that flare and it is gorgeous all right onto the percussion very good use the samba or could be small mombo not really sure anyhow I digress really havent been on doing music for quite some time. But your art here on this page made me get an account again.and since I had my first account on Newgrounds back in 2003 I don't use that email nor do I remember much of those days. Getting off my rant. Very nice hook into the intro. You do a good job to make you wonder then have that big push and it let's off to this sexy voice. (She gets your own remarks however this is your review)very good control of instruments to pull back and accent her voice and her message.

My friend in real music you don't fight to be heard. The composer has you do your job for the best big picture. Very well done.

Step responds:

Oh crap, late reply! Sorry.

Thanks for the long and encouraging review. I'm glad you like it. And welcome back to Newgrounds!

In reading one of your earlier responses in another review, I totally get the James Bond influence behind this song! The female singers who contributed their parts have some serious talent! Congratulations to them both.

I notice percussion improvement! Also, all the other instruments sound so good and professional. Everything blends and fits like a glove.

I honestly have nothing but praise to input here, towards this gem. It's nothing short among your greatest of tracks! Bravo!

Step responds:

SFJ! Long time no see!

Thrilled to hear that you like it enough to call it one of my greatest tracks. I wanted to make this track as good as I could possibly make it, because it's part of the soundtrack of one of my favourite games ever.

Thanks for dropping by. c:

holy shit this is amazing . the best metal gear track on new grounds

Step responds:

Aw thanks! That's really great to hear.

Glad you like it.

AAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!! ...I lost my load.
My god...ohhhhhhh...REALLY makes me want to be able to pick through that collaboration album you and your buddies got over there in Harmony of Heroes! Any way to do that? iTunes, perhaps?

Step responds:

Haha I'm really glad you liked it. You should definitely check out the rest of the Harmony of Heroes music. There are another 127 Smash Bros arrangements just like this one.
