I was just randomly playing around with Logic, trying to see what I could do with it. I sometimes feel a bit ashamed of how derivative my impulses are. :P

I had no idea what genre this went under, so it's just miscellaneous. I didn't really make it to belong to any certain genre, it was just where my brain took me. Techno? New Wave? Goth? (wtf is goth anyways)

Hey, look, another example of me being a hypocrite! Personally, I don't really like intros that consist of a single instrument unless the song has really simple instrumentation. I find that the reasons I listen to songs over and over are because they keep me interested, and with a one-instrument intro, I already know what's going to happen, which puts me in a much less interested mood for the rest of the song.

The melodies in this song are pretty weird, because I used quite a few improper notes, but the song itself is pretty weird, so I thought I'd let it slide. Also, that transition into the outro is pretty crappy. :D

Thanks for listening! I'll have some much more high-quality stuff up next week (I hope)!

(Also thanks to LucidShadowDreamer for inspiring the title!)

Well that sound good in some moments but in general it is far from perfect. Tempo enough fast but track is not vigorous.

LunacyEcho responds:

Yeah, this wasn't really written with production quality in mind. It was the first "real" song I wrote in Logic; gotta understand how to compose before you learn how to produce!

I like it. It's pretty simple and has some cool moments behind it. Usually I find that if it's electronic and it's composition heavy I don't think people mind too much if it goes in the video game genre. I do that at least and no one has said anything. It still does give a bit of a 90's feel, but you still make it your unique style. I can see this stuff being used for some Luigi's Mansion stuff.

Starting with the mixing first. It's not bad, but it does seem held back at times. Especially at 00:49. The chorus synths could stick out a bit more. However, you still make sure that what is telling the theme the most is heard. I like the transitioning arpeggios.

The composition is where you still shine, and I like that. It really helps to have both mixing and composition, but I find in my opinion a piece that's mixed really well but is lacking in composition is fun for a bit but isn't as entertaining as something that doesn't have the best mixing but is really fun to listen to. But like I said, it helps to have both nailed down. Otherwise it's like cold pizza that's three days old. Not as good as when it's fresh.

Back to your composition though, I like what I hear. It's like a dark cartoon (or like Luigi's Mansion as I've said earlier). It doesn't quite stick out as something that makes me want to download it and listen to it while I'm doing homework though *sad face*, but you're on your way. You use the simple chord changes quite effectively, and then you break it up a bit to keep it fresh at 00:49. The build up at 01:27 is a nice touch.

It could use work, but I wouldn't touch it (doesn't make sense but oh well). It's nifty and I look forward to seeing more of your work. While the synths you're using sound vintage, your style isn't.

LunacyEcho responds:

Hi!

=> video game genre =>

I guess so. I'll probably do that from now on, seeing as 'video game' entices more people than 'miscellaneous'.

=> Luigi's Mansion =>

Really? Sweet!

=> mixing held back =>

That's pretty interesting. In retrospect, I think what I should've done there is bring out the chordal synth, lower the velocities of the snares, and add a limiter to the master track. Well, it's a bit too late now, isn't it? :P

=> composition + production =>

I think Step once said that those are the two pillars of music. Different people can enjoy different aspects without having much of the other, but everyone can enjoy a song that has both. Your cold pizza simile is great! :D

=> simple chord changes =>

Who ever thought that Cm-Bm-Em would ever work? Not me, that's for sure. But it does! Somehow. I'm not well-versed enough in music theory to explain that. :P

=> buildup at 1:27 =>

Thanks! That's one of my favorite parts of the song, even though it's a really simple and overdone transition.

=> "While the synths you're using sound vintage, your style isn't." =>

I think that's a pretty great way to describe lots of my music. :)

Thanks a ton for the big review! I'll keep all that in mind.

As you might know, I like dark stuffz :3

As you also know, I like video game music.

as you ALSO know, I think this piece resembles old school video game music, which is always a plus in my book :'D
As I'm sure you also know... I've actually reviewed part of this song before, so I won't give you a full out review this time. (speaking of reviews, holy crap that guy below me gave a low score for no apparent reason o.O)

I understand what jobromedia means, but I actually like the simplicity of this. It's obvious that your intention wasn't to cram this track up with millions of synths and other instruments while mastering all of them carefully so that they sound just right, but rather to experiment while having some fun.

This has a bit of the LunacyEcho-y feel, but I like how it's actually very different from your usual style.

The melodies are great as always. They manage to stay true to the darker tone (while sounding a bit arabic at one point!). The bass too, along with the percussion, sounds just fine XD
Most transitions seem pretty random, but that's also what's pretty good about them. It's not just one transition that's a bit off; all of them are changing the song, giving it a feel of evolving.

What's more, I really like the ending on this one!

Sure, you could've used more instruments, mixed more and added more effects and stuff, but I like to listen to experimental stuff, and this definitely fits that description :)

All in all, great job ;)

LunacyEcho responds:

=> jobromedia =>

Thanks! I'm glad my intention showed.

=> melodies =>

The melodies were actually pretty interesting in this song. The majority of the chord changes in the song go from Cm-Bm and back, and I'm sure there were tons of notes that didn't actually follow that pattern.

=> transitions =>

I DEFINITELY wasn't working on transitions this time. :D The only things I did to make the transitions to the breakdown less bad were a snare drum roll and a synth arp. Unoriginal and ineffective, but I wasn't really focusing on transitions for this one. :P Glad you liked them, though!

=> ending =>

Yay! No more chorus->final note for me!

=> Sure, ... =>

Yeah, but there's lots of things I COULD'VE done, and I ought to start work on my next project soon. :P

Thanks for the review!

This is not the best track. It has pretty no mastering at all, it sounds pretty boring. Please don't take this the wrong way, I can clearly hear you got some potential, but you need to work harder to bring it to the front. Keep up your work!

LunacyEcho responds:

Well, this is the first complicated song I tried creating with a new DAW, so there are definitely going to be a few mistakes. I'm not entirely sure what you mean when you say it doesn't really have mastering at all, though, but I'm glad you think I have potential. Regardless, thanks for listening!
