hmm... i wanted to write something really chill and emotional bc i thought steam/zipzip were gonna do something really energetic...but then they didnt submit anything :(

featuring @etherealwinds on vocals! :D he sent me this random 40 second clip which i chopped up and used. fun! (to be clear, what he sent me sounds nothing like what eventually ended up in this song. I arranged the heck out of it.)

So this time I wrote my song in 3 days rather than 2. Can you tell? :P (well, aside from the song length, haha. I actually didn't even intend to write such a long song. And it was going to be even longer, but I deleted a section.)

I've been listening to a lot of Hiatus recently: hiatusmusic.bandcamp.com/album/ghost-notes Picking apart their songs has taught me a lot, particularly about song structure and drums. I spent a lot of time on drum choice in this song, though honestly if I had more time I'd spend even more time making them work well. Still not 100% satisfied with them.

What I am satisfied with is how I bring across emotions and do stuff in a subtle way, without ever being in your face. I also like how this is branching off (or perhaps an extension of) my style. I feel like I was getting kinda stylistically repetitive before, but I feel like this is a bit new for me.

HOW DID I MISS THIS ONE?!?!?!?! I love the atmosphere in the beginning - that soulful guitar and the spacey piano and synths are beautiful! The melodies at around :50 just add to the emotion more, and those drums add an appropriate element of energy to the piece. The children's voices that come in at around 3:00 add a lot of meaning to the piece in my opinion, especially given the title. EtherealWinds' vocals added a lot to the piece, too. Man, he is GOOD! It's strange how the lack of words in the vocals seem to give them meaning...almost like "redemption" means finding an identity again, but now there are no words left to describe yourself. The saxophone-sounding synth and heavier bass synth at 4:15 added some much-needed contrast. I can tell you thought a lot about where to include the drums and where not to. This is fantastic, though. I was beginning to yearn for some dynamic contrast, and then 5:54 happened - just hauntingly beautiful, Johnfn. I deeply regret not reviewing this earlier. Hopefully it will all be worth it when (if?) I get into college. :') Well, anyway, this is an instant favorite and download. This needs to be on my iPod NOW! I love the change of style, btw. Keep up the inspiring work, my friend. ;'D

I love what im hearing here. Clearly there's a lot of emotion in the song. Emotion in a track is what separates good music from great music. a little advice i could throw at you would be to kind of chill with your delay on your main lead sound. It's a really nice sound, but to much delay can make it have a kind of jarring effect. The kids playing is a great effect. that transition at 3:45 is great as well. i noticed that you really put a muffle on that bass before that transition almost making it impossible to hear without good speakers. I would say that if you were to gradually cut whatever you did to muffle that kick so it builds up and then have it slam like it does right at the transition point, it could sound real nice. The piano is great btw. Your mix down is about perfect. Great track John.
