Alright, so I listened to both of the remixes you did of this particular song (your old one and this one), and here is my opinion:
For the most part this is a solid mix. However, one key area that grates me in this piece is that the main synth used in the chorus section (0:44 or 0:45 to 1:13 I believe) is... well, it "scrapes my ears" so to speak, and doesn't give that particular segment its deserved "oomph" that makes it so awesome.
Because this particular section of the song is one of the key reasons I prefer Act 2 over Act 1, I have to take a point off for the poor choice of instrumentation here. I know you have the capability to improve the overall sound of songs - your choice to use a different drumset and synth set for the verse of the song (up until 0:30) is a direct improvement in this version over your prior attempt, where I felt both the synth and drums were lacking.
The biggest strength in this remix of Hydrocity is that your choice of lead synth and drums give the song a powerful groove in the pre-chorus (0:30 to 0:44); I believe this particular section is the mix's strongest point (and was also vastly improved between V1 and V2).
The addition of vocals did startle me at first - and while it took getting used to, in the end it did not detract from the entirety of the mix, so I will say you dodged a demerit here.
In the end, if you fix the issue with the chorus synth, I'd say you would have a perfect 5 star piece on your hands. However, the synth issue and where it occurs, in the end, forces me to give you 4/5.
But hey, I know you can do it. You've shown improvement as a musician, and I think you have potential.
Absolutely cujo, I know what you mean about the chorus, trust me, I will do another mix. And the vocals, they are a bit hit and miss, I did trial the song with and without them, I thought the song sounded better with them. Thanks for the review bud. :) 28/11/15 - Just looking at this again, thank you for the amazing review Cujo!
This is brilliant.
There is nothing to complain about, and it's super groovy!
Cheers bud. I'm glad this song turned out ok. :)
Please contact me if you would like to use this in a project. We can discuss the details.
