The Door - Innocence

I made the melody for this song in July of 2012. Created the harmonies in March 2014 with a crappy string pre-set and some pads from Sakura. After a long, drawn-out journey to find better string samples which involved consulting the advice of Johnfn, Midimachine, Lockyn and Yoshiii343 (to name a few), buying Fruity Soundfont Player, spending way too long staring helplessly at the "My Downloads" tab on Image-Line's website, and generally going insane, I finished this track! :D It's 4 minutes of liquid drum and bass, heavily inspired by Alloud's "Rain State," as well as Waterflame's "Ricochet Love." It took me about 8 hours total in FL Studio 10. I mostly used Autogun, Sakura, and DrumPad. Perhaps this is a step backwards from my last track, but I want to continue to experiment with different genres. Thanks for all the support/help I got with this track, NG community, and enjoy! ;D

Whoah, how did I miss this?

Anyhow, I like the drumbeat in this song, as well as the pads/strings :D
The atmosphere is good :)
The instruments work very well together.

I agree with BlueOceans on this one though. A more clear melody could be added, as there is certainly room for it, especially at some parts!
I can't really sense anything wrong with the mixing, so good job with that :p

It's great that you're experimenting. It's probably the fastest way to learn and progress!
Well done, and keep it up ;)

TaintedLogic responds:

Thanks LSD! :D I'm really glad you liked the pads and strings, especially the strings. XD I'll definitely work on the melodies for next time, then! I was thrilled to hear the harmonies and mixing were good, though. I've struggled with those a lot in the past, too. Thanks again, LSD! I'll review your new track as soon as I get home from work (4:00 a.m. E. European time).

I love the atmosphere, the synth and the pads! They made the song very relaxing. I liked the drum beat, but I felt like the break from the drum beat came too late into the song, when the drum beat already started to feel repetitive. There is enough variation in the drum beat towards the end of the song though. I think you could have done a lot more with the hi hats instead of mostly focusing on the kick and snare.
The biggest problem with this song is the lack of a dominant melody. You may have thought that there was a melody being played by the synth, but I thought of it only as a background instrument.

TaintedLogic responds:

Thanks BO! :D Yeah, I understand what you mean about the repetitive drums. Usually my drum patterns loop every 2 measures, but this one loops every single measure. I agree about the variation on the hi-hats too. I just thought the kick and the snare should be the most important in a piece like this. I definitely understand what you mean about the lack of a dominant melody, too. I modeled this piece after Alloud's "Rain State" stylistically, and that piece doesn't really have one either. Thanks so much for the review, BlueOceans! ^^ Are you going to post more often now that it's summer, btw?
