Since you said you haven't mixed vocals a lot, here are some tips to help you with that:
Reduce the plostives (P, B, T etc) by using a transient shaper, a compressor with a very short attack or by manually editing them all - most time consuming but most control.
Reduce the amount of noise reduction so that it's not audible on the vocals themselves when they get quiet. You can mask some of the sound with EQ (just find where it is and remove that bit of the sound) and that would be preferable to the bit-crushed sound a noise remover leaves behind.
