This haunting work for piano and trombone was originally performed by a couple of my highly skilled professors at my senior recital on Halloween. The title for this piece came to me after I composed it. Starting with the idea to write a composition for trombone and piano based on a scale that was not formed around an octave, I wrote a form, some basic motives, and a few creative ideas, and began the composition process. I wrote the work almost entirely without listening to what I was creating. When I was finished, the piece I heard made me feel like I was in an uncomfortable trance. The closest experience that this piece reminded me of was a frightening nightmare. Thus, I decided on the title A Waking Dream.
