For once, this is a new song.

This month actually marks the time of me having played the piano for five years. It was a huge change in my life, as I had never played any instrument before. I finally found something to put down all my extra energy into :p

This song was heavily inspired by <a href="http://johnfn.newgrounds.com/">Johnfn</a>'s "<a href="http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/559434">Snowy Night</a>" (Which nobody should notice in any way, shape or form). Originally, the first fifty seconds of this composition were actually an improvisation, but I didn't record it :( However, the rest of the improvisation sucked anyway, so it's okay.
I remembered pretty much all of the improv, so I could use it as a base for this song.

There isn't really anything special about this song, imo. It sounds okay I guess, but it's far from the best I can do :p
Once again, my piano skills weren't sufficient enough to get the tones fully on beat (tempo changes not included). Especially not since I had to do this in one recording (because of an irritating neighbour). For my skill level this is still a pretty difficult song to play. I did however edit the song slightly, to rid of the worst mistakes. What still bothers me is that the volume of some notes is really off :)

All that said, I'm still somewhat pleased with the result. I would've wanted to add strings to this, but my time is still limited D: (If I ever do get time, I might add more to this later). I just felt that I really wanted to upload something NEW to NEWgrounds, for change.

I also added some reverb to this song with Cubase.

Oh, and if you wonder why the name doesn't necessarily fit the song, it's because I just came up with it spontaneoulsy XD

Anyhow, that aside: Happy Valentines Day (a little late)!

Feel free to help a learning musician by posting a review ;)

- The piano sound is not a VSTi, but my Yamaha Clavinova CLP-230, which still beats all my piano VSTi:s.

- I also used UpStereo, because it has become a weird habit of mine (I have a hard time telling whether this adds to or takes away from the song. You can compare to the unmixed version of this song <a href="http://yourlisten.com/ShadowDreamer/the-forgotten-past">here</a>!)

This is just beautiful <3

Thanks a lot, DjHoneyb!

Wow,I really like this piece. The record made it sounds like a half-broken memory or sth......and I think you do have the talent (at least comparing with me...hmm).I tried a lot composing but it cost so much time because I couldn't copy down the right notes from my mind which they were supposed to be......Anyways,do you mind sending your score to me?I'd love to learn to play it by myself.

Why hello! Thanks a lot for the review :3
Yeah, composing is an acquired skill, unless you're a natural :)
I actually don't have sheet music for this piece, but I dug up an old MIDI-file from my computer, which can be seen with software like synthesia. If you want to, I'll send it to you!
Just send me your e-mail adress, so that I can send the file! :D

This song is almost perfect. The melodies are beautiful and there is tons of variation through out the song. The emotion and mood are both extremely apparent The piano playing was overall excellent.

I just have a few complaints. The piano sample you used doesn't sound very good, and some notes have too many low frequencies. Did you not EQ the piano? The song's mood was a very sad one, however, the ending of the song was the opposite since it ended on a satisfying note. I alway feel that sad piano songs should end on a sad note so it leaves the listener feeling slightly unsatisfied.

I'm glad you liked the song! I'm also happy to see that you liked the variation, along with the melodies and the portraying of emotions :)

"The piano sample you used doesn't sound very good"

=> Well, hmm. I beg to differ. I ensure you, the piano sound is originally good, but what I did to it might not be. You see, it's actually not a VSTi sample, but a (good, somewhat expensive) electronic piano that is responsible for the sound. However, I personally suck at using DAWs, so if the sound is not good, it's most likely because of something that I did :D

"some notes have too many low frequencies."

=> Yeah, you might be right :p It's probably because I used so many low notes, and if you boost wrong notes and add much reverb they might not sound so good :)

"Did you not EQ the piano?"

=> Aww, you caught me :'D

"The song's mood was a very sad one...ended on a satisfying note...should end on a sad note".

=> I have to both agree and disagree with you on this point. I think that one might do what you suggest in some songs, but that is in no way necessary . Also, that last chord is a minor (often perceived as more sad) chord, and I did not want to make it dissonant :D

Aside from that, there are some parts of this song that aren't really that sad, imo.
It's not true in this case, but in some songs, the last note is intentionally happy, or satisfying. This might indicate a happy ending, or some other mood change. You might be right in that I could have ended this song in another way though; I personally think that it's a bit too abrupt :/

Anyway, thank you for the review! I always like to see what different people have to say, and you often point out stuff that others don't!

Man this is even better than my piece. I feel like I should write a lot here because you usually write a good deal but honestly its just great and I can't say too much more. I regret not coming by earlier.

You play piano really well btw. 5 years paid off. :D

Thanks for checking my stuff out, and for writing a review! It's much appreciated :D

"Better than my piece."

=> Then again, your piece was a real improvisation! This song was simply based on one, so I could think much more about how I wanted things to sound. Also, I actually like Snowy Night more than I like my composition. The melody in your song is much better imo :p

"I feel like I should write a lot ... it's just great"

=> First of all, thank you! And I'm just happy you decided to drop by! It's not easy to write reviews for all kinds of songs, and I often find that piano music is one of the most difficult 'genres' to write long reviews for :)

"I regret not coming by earlier"

=> Well there's no need to do that :') I was happily surprised to see a review from you now, so the time doesn't really matter ;)

Aside from that, thanks once more for complimenting my piano skills; I too think that the years of playing have paid off :'D

I like it. I enjoyed the western style :)
I'm not here to actually give you a review. I just wanted to let you know that I listened to it and enjoyed it. Isn't that what making music is about? Expressing yourself honestly and enjoying the purity of that expression.

Thanks a lot!

Yes, I think you're right. Music is supposed to be a source of enjoyment, in many ways. I love the way that music can be used for almost anything, since it is so good at portraying feelings.

Thank you again for stopping by and taking a listen :')
