What Child Is This?

My second Christmas present to all on Newgrounds. I don't think this carol needs any introductions, because it is relatively popular after all. And it is based on an equally popular tune, Greensleeves.

Now the lyrics do differ from hymnal to hymnal, but I used this set:

-----

What child is this, who, laid to rest
On Mary's lap is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet
While shepherds watch are keeping?
This, this is Christ the King
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing,
Haste, haste to bring him laud,
The babe, the son of Mary

Why lies he in such mean estate,
Where ox and ass are feeding?
Come have no fear: God's Son is here,
His love all loves exceeding
Nails, spear shall pierce him through:
The cross he bore for me, for you:
Hail, hail the Word made flesh:
The babe, the son of Mary

So bring him incense, gold and myrrh,
Come, peasant, king, to own him:
The King of kings salvation brings,
Let loving hearts enthrone him
Raise, raise the song on high!
The virgin sings her lullaby,
Joy, joy for Christ is born!
The babe, the son of Mary

Joy, joy for Christ is born!
The babe, the son of Mary

When it comes to newgrounds, this is probably the best piece that I've heard this year and even thought the year is not entirely over, I'm pretty damn sure that nothing is going to best it. Unless it's something else made by you. ;) This is basicaly all that soft and emotional stuff I dig in the big budget soundtracks from movies and games. Thousands of thumbs up for this extraordinary thingie, because its not only awesome but also very inspirational.

BEAUTIFUL! I'm shivering here. It starts so gentle and delicate, and builds perfectly. My only complaint is your first "joy" after the swell sounds a bit strange. For that, I take off 0.1 stars, which still rounds to 5 stars. XD

I love the way you used the bagpipes.

More lovely carolling from yourself, Troisnyx. I quite like this trio so far!

First of all, as always, you are a true pianist when it comes to music like this. The delicate piano sequence really glistened throughout this composition: a soft sound that left me silent, thinking about thick blankets of descending snow on the night of Christmas Eve and stuff. Pity, though: the UK weather, again, has failed to bless the land with a white December. Ah well, January never lets me down. :P

Your singing voice is stunning; gentle against the melody of 'Greensleeves' (haven't heard that since primary school, haha!) and I can hear that you did your best, indeed.

Another triumph, friend. Keep it up!

5 / 5

Troisnyx responds:

I just realised that it hardly ever snows in Preston. D'oh! >_<
At any rate, I'm glad and grateful that you thoroughly enjoyed this. <3 Thank you for listening!

Nice piece. Great atmosphere. Merry christmas!

Absolutely beautiful, Trois! Have a Merry Christmas and Peace be with you!
