Submission for 2013 NGDM Round 1! Songs rarely jump into my head fully formed, and this one was no exception. The structure, however, was in place from the beginning, and as a result I think it's one of the song's most effective elements.

More than anything else, though, the song was an exercise in how fun songwriting can be-- even the absurd amount of time I spent tightening up the vocal harmonies was ultimately pretty rewarding.

Also my first release mastered in Logic Pro X, which I find underwhelming in that isn't all that different from its predecessor, albeit with an annoying lack of support for 32-bit plugins.

Anyway, hope you enjoy!

Hi! I was a replacement judge for NGADM round 1 and this is my review of your track!
I scored mixing and composition/arrangement separately so I'll explain here what score I gave you and why. 8/10 in my scoring scheme is "Great", 10/10 is exceptional. To get 10 the piece needed to go beyond expectations, to have a unique sonic quality and present an original aspect (or several) in terms of composition.
Production: 7/10
You mixed the track well, that's for sure. Everything has its place and they fit together coherently in the space. On the other hand you have a very amateurish sound! It's a shame, you should work on that. I'd say the guitar sounds like guitar pro or something...
Composition/arrangement (where valid): 7
You have definitely got a talent for singing. Good tone, precise performance. On the other hand this sounds like so many other things out there, the kind you hear in teen movies and such.

7/10, good technical skills, good vocals, not so good sound, not the most original work.
Over all good score though, congrats.

This is an NGADM Round 1 review.

I didn't expect this from you after your audition. And I didn't expect you to be a singer either! The singing is actually very good (apart from some slightly sloppy performance mistakes here and there). You're a natural singer and when the song gives the vocals some space to shine, they really do shine. Good guitar-playing, as well as simple but enjoyable composition that makes this very reminiscent of high school pop bands and whatnot, which might be why this track has a distinctly likeable charm.

Unfortunately, mixing/production is a very important part of a track in this genre. Your track is really brickwalled, and peaking almost all the time, which leads to a plethora of problems such as crushing/distortion of your sounds, a cluttered mix, too much loudness, and a generally unclear sound. The way you produced this track unfortunately makes it sound a bit sloppy in certain parts, especially when you have loads of vocal lines playing together. It was a good idea but since there's such a big clash of instruments it makes everything hard to understand and all over the place. And I mean, apart from that, this track is a bit cheesy haha, although I don't think I'll deduct any points for that this time round, because it contributes to giving this track its charm.

Anyway, that was enjoyable but the production needs a lot of work. It's the main issue with this track (along with some iffy transitions that I won't bother mentioning). Good job overall!

Score: 7.3/10

I REALLY like the songwriting here, but the mixing is totally screwed up, it's distorting like crazy in the last bits, e.g. 2:55! That was really ruining my appreciation of the song. Other than that problem though, I like it a lot, especially when we have multiple vocal lines running simultaneously towards the end. Reminds me of the pop-punk bands of my childhood. :-)

jvonm responds:

Yeah... a lot of my plugins started acting up after the move to Logic Pro X, especially dynamics. I just found the problem— I based the mix off a multimeter insert that was slotted before the multiband compression. -_- The multimeter AFTER the multipressor is presently flipping out quite magnificently.

Still, I was reading up on the NGADM judging criteria and it seems we're to be judged mostly based on the actual quality of the song, so hopefully even a relatively bothersome mixing mishap won't play too big of a role.

Either way, I'll still have had a ton of fun crafting the individual elements of the song; I'm confident that the strong songwriting here will at the very least make the judges' decision a difficult one. You know, for what that's worth. *zing*
