This thing, which began as an impromptu on 4 July, took me two days to finish. It's intended as a character theme for a young man who is studying for the priesthood.

Yep, some of you can already guess what project this loop is for. ;-) This is my favourite track in the OST so far. I'm going for a Phoenix Wright/Professor Layton-inspired OST, but with quite a lot of deviation as I'll be emphasising chords, melodies and harmonies a lot.

FL Studio 10. I don't think I need to say more.

Hey there Troisnyx, i have seen you wanted a review on this:

I really love the piano jazz chords and the mood of the complete piece. The theme is very lyrical and cute. I like melancholic and sad piano ballad style pieces :D The complete piano part is really nice and i cant find anny issues there. What really sounds quite unrealistic at some points is the violin, especially the upwards slides which are a little bit to fast for my gusto. Dont know which vst you did use. You needed a better one and the sound quality would be much better (i was quite impressed by the solo violin included in EWQL gypsy which has got a nice legato violin and good KS possibilities). But that doesnt change the fact that the composition it self is really, and i mean really beautiful and touching! Which makes the sound even more interesting are those high synth (?) notes which give a very unique touch to the piece. What really works well is the looping itself - very well done and balanced!

All the best to you. Hope i could be of your help :D

Troisnyx responds:

VST is an understatement -- that was Fruity Soundfont Player, and that was a really craptastic violin soundfont. XD And yes, those blips were synths -- soundfonts too, just like the rest of the ensemble.

Thanks for the review -- much appreciated! x

First thoughts, nice piano accompaniment. Like the soft piano sound. Nice harmonic movement. Structure changes things up enough, and keeps track interesting.

However, not a massive fan of the string sound. Sounds too fake and electronic. Lets down the track, which is really awesome apart from that! As someone said, you could do with some better samples!

Really well composed though well structured, and nicely instrumented*! *strings good choice, just need better sound

Troisnyx responds:

Thank you for listening and reviewing <3 I agree, the string soundfont here sounds rather.... ick. Any suggestions on good string packs will be well appreciated!

(also note that I don't have much to splurge at the moment; in fact, I have none at the moment -- but waiting is an option!)

I listen to your music when I want to feel bad about my abilities as a composer haha. Awesome job.

You have very nice chord progressions in this piece (some secondary function chords, very nice) -- that is the thing which stood out to me. Your transitions were seamless, and the overall piece had a consistent character throughout.

On things to improve:
1. Your strings stand out from the rest of the mix -- the piano sounds very nice, and the little electronic synth that comes back a few times is very tasteful. The strings sound very fake in contrast. I know there isn't much you can do about this without spending money, but I really think using some quality samples would improve the track a lot.
2. Adding in some dynamic swells could add a lot of character to the piece. You do this some, but it can be done even more. Just crescendo and decrescendo through phrases.

Overall, I really enjoyed this piece. It was very musical, and I look forward to hearing more from you.
