So here is my entry for the AIM. This is the first contest I participate here in newgrounds and I came up with a chinese song for the digital painting"Lost Magic" by AkiCarlito. The song is divided in three sections. The first one is of course the main theme of the painting, lost magic. The song is build upon pentatonic scales to give the chinese flavor but instead of using a sad song to represent the lost of magic I used C major to bring some nostalgia.

The second part is done in allegro and in a more festival feeling. In this part the magic is coming back and everyone is remembering how everything was and for the conclusion of the piece, the return of the magic. The theme from the beginning in a really emotive way using strings and wings ensembles.

I used Garritan Instant Orchestra, and Personal Orchestra. For the chinese instruments I used DSK Asian Dream Guzhel and Pipa. I did the song in about two days and a half with mixing and mastering.

Ahh...reminds me of Mulan, the old Disney classic with it's soft music. This definitely could be in a beautiful animation as such, it's peaceful and it feels like it tells a story :) No doubt it fits the image, but I will say the harpsichord felt out of place in this song, unless I'm wrong and that's another instrument. Now one issue here is the volume of this track being too quiet, but it is very beautiful and captures great emotion, I love this. Great work.

Thanks a lot, yeah that's a harpsichord. I went through a lot of instruments for that kind of baroque section, maybe another instruments could have been better.
Thanks for the review.

You've got some great instruments at play, and your harmonies are beautiful. Actually, I find your main theme extremely reminiscent of "Colors of the Wind", in Pocahontas.
The second segment of your song is perhaps the most creative, and the composition is very nice, and definitely fun-sounding. Upbeat for sure! In fact, if I was in the setting of that movie, I could definitely imagine a festival going on.

So, I like that you've divided up your track! Strays away from the conventional "song"-type ideal. However, this sectioning of your song left your transitioning at an awkward state. The transition to your second section was sudden, but fit better than the one to your third. A little more work on your transitions could help the slight disjointedness of the song.

I hear a couple key errors, one at 1:10 and with the strings at 3:15. I hear one at 1:45 with the bells, but that is very minor.
As for your ending, the strings cut off rather numbly, which is like a door shutting in your face compared to the beauty and grace earlier in the song! Perhaps add a bit of decay at the end, or aim for a stronger ending? It just didn't sit right.

Your volume is also very low, so when you make your newer version, you may want to considering increasing it! Although they sound alright, I find that your DSK instruments are not able to breathe properly as they are now.

Overall, this is a very nice cinematic-type piece that could use some work. I look forward to hearing your extended version!

Thanks I love this type of constructive review.
I appreciate it.

I just watched IP man. And then I come here and listen to this that reminds me a lot to Chinese music. I like that you composed different moods, or parts. The song fits well to the art. The mix could have some more bass to fill out the low frequencies to get more depth in the song. Also I am hearing is a C major and a C minor at the same time at the end, if you listen closely. I hope that was not in purpose. The song is good besides from that.

Anyway, I listened to all the entries and your piece in my opinion is within the top 15 at least! Keep it up, and good luck!

Thanks a lot for the review and the constructive critique. Yeah about the mix I actually did the song in my brothers laptop with some really cheap headphones because I was on vacation and when I arrived at home and listened to the song I noticed that but I already upload it.

I didn't noticed the last chord error maybe I accidentally put a E flat on the wind section. I am planning on making an extended version of the song so thanks a lot for spotting those errors.

Thanks a lot.
