I recently decided to pick up Ableton Live. This is the first song I've produced with it.

I've decided to kill two birds with one stone by covering songs from the excellent Chrono Cross soundtrack while learning Ableton. First, I get to learn from one of the best video game composers of all time (let's be honest, Yasunori Mitsuda is *the* best). Second, producing my own material in Ableton is hard because I don't know my way around so well yet. Remixing stuff is easier.

Given infinite time, I'd cover the whole CD. At the rate I'm going, though, that'd take nearly a year, so perhaps I'll just cover a few more songs before I move on. I'm definitely plan to cover "Dream of the Shore Bordering Another World", which is the most beautiful video game song ever composed.

It turns out that under the cover of this deceptively simple song, there are actually some really tricky details. Lots of syncopation and tricky rhythms. (dat bass! dat muted guitar! dat every time a xylophone shows up!) Took me a long time to get, and I'm still not 100% sure it's right.

His music is also quite layered, which I tried to stay true to. In fact, as I arranged the song, I started to think that Mitsuda must have had a drinking game going for every layer he could introduce in the song. There are 14 patterns going at the same time in my remix. Try to count them all! ;-)

Good use of panning for all the layers. I was a bit turned off by the presence of the percussion, compared to the original, on the first listen. It grew on me though.

funny i thought i responded to this one but i guess i didn't. anyway the original has a bit of percussion too! but i admit it does have a different feel. it's quite difficult for me to accurately replicate percussion, but next time i shall try harder!

So hows the internet feel so far? For one this is really good for a first attempt.

johnfn responds:

The internet? do you mean ableton? lol. it's pretty good but there's a lot to learn to get up to speed!

you use ableton right? do you have any tips? >:)
