You Don't Understand Me

Instrumental by MakaBeatz, vocals by Breaker.
I used to walk around the school yard humming
I used to spend my time in class just drumming
On the desk/I wasn't interested in taking the tests
And ending up in debt when I'm twenty like the rest
I just wanted to be a great musician and see
The world on tour one day and maybe be the guy
Who brought joy into the lives of who enjoyed
My music, and also use it to make a living
If I could do it like that I'd be extatic
I started writing lyrics for those happy songs
And had it all planned out
I planned to be the stand-out with all the fans
But that now is just a plan but back then
It was the dream
My teachers asked me why my head was filled
With distractions instead of fractions
I wasn't paying attention
They asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up
So I wrote down "Happy", just like John Lennon.

I used to walk around at work beat-boxing
While I stacked shelves/Rhyming to myself
Just to practise freestyling/Used to write lines in my lunchbreak
Because I knew that one day my life was gonna get much greater
But until then, I knew I'd have to just wait
Continue selling dumb games to dumb people
Asking dumb questions/Having conversations
With any of my friends who dropped by
I don't give a damn about KPIs/Say goodbye
On to the next job and maybe try to keep it
For as long as possible, 'cause I need to pay the rent
And the basics everyday
Spending all of my cash on food and transportation
And watch it drain away when I really need it
It seems my dream would have to wait
For another day when I get the time
To invest it into my definition of a life
With the vision in my mind that I'm missing everytime
And I'm wishing I could find it.

I sit around staring at my computer screen
Writing awkward lines that just fit together beautifully
Rhyming to the beats that I credit just as dutifully
My life and my dream having come together musically
Ha! I wish! Unfortunately I
Have to do a lot of work just to try and get by
Looking for the jobs that will get me to a state
Where I can balance everything and finally satiate my desire to make
The music that I like/But hey/I don't have the time
I have an interview to get to/Dressing to the nines
In my best to impress dudes who test my intellect through
The same seven questions that they all seem to get from the internet
But when they ask me what my hobbies are
I tell 'em that I rap and they look at me and start to laugh
Best believe I know the feeling that you get
When you're telling peeps your dreams and they just don't understand.

This is really awesome man! I love the lyrics quite a bit, really stand out, and they're REAL. REAL lyrics about a REAL subject. I really like your flow too, works really well with the beat. I'm going to put this one on my iPod man. This is awesome!

YOU are awesome, thanks for the kind words man! :-D

I really like the concept of this song. Resonates with me. Great beat and lyrics. I really liked the bit at the end of the second verse. It'd be cool to hear some more playing about with flow, but maybe this isn't the song to do that with.

soundbreaker responds:

Thanks man, this was a lazy-afternoon style song that took me on a trip down memory lane, so I wasn't gonna change-up the flow too much. Freakin' love this instrumental, though.

Thanks for the five, too!
