So it's been a long time since I composed - I've been listening to a lot of atonal Frank Zappa pieces performed by the Ensemble Modern and also on Synclavier, so I felt inspired by that. The piece evolves from a basic fretlass bass line to a mix of melodies on clavinet, piano, dulcimer that descend into weird atonal Glockenspiel notes. The bass riff speeds up, rapidly descending percussive xylophone notes and other odd percussion enter the fray, and then we get a weird "vocal" experiment supplanted by muted trumpet and tuba, finishing with discordant viola/cello "harmonies" and a sort of reassuring acoustic guitar "resolution."
One major problem was that due to a bug in the program that converts MIDI to mp3, many of the original intended instruments ended up being something else. I tried to fix this for quite some time, but if you follow the example of David Lynch's films, accidents on set can actually add to the whole concept, so I ultimately left it as it is.
