I can see what you mean about the drumline being a bit annoying. Its hard to hear much else, but if I recall, some games used to be like that. The flow is there, which is great. The drums are simply too powerful, but other than that, it sounds great. Like marching to your allies deaths... (If it wasnt player two, they died- I just ruined like two hundred NES storylines, didnt I?)

Spot on hitting your targeted genre, sounded very much like an old-school battle tune. Hearkening back to the original Final Fantasies or even old platformers.
I can understand what you mean when you say the drumbeat pissed you off, it feels complex and hard to execute, but I personally am glad you stuck with it. It really adds to the piece and I imagine it would sound rather naked without it.
Good looping too, I didn't even notice it had looped until I looked at it.
Fantastic job, very much above par.
