So I found myself with a wild hair up my ass today and decided to try singing something. Now, my voice isn't so great. I'm not a singer, I'm a musician and mixer. This is my first time recording and mixing vocals and I just wanted to see how it might sound. I decided to go with a cover of a certain over-played GreenDay song because it's easy to play and everyone knows it so I thought it might be easier to get feedback / advice on it. I didn't want to put a whole lot of time into it so the mixing and recording isn't the best. I also only covered one verse. I also couldn't help but to throw a short solo in there :)

I guess it didn't turn out too gawd awful for an amateur, but I know its crap compared to a seasoned vocalist. Still, I might end up attempting some originals with vocals eventually. Honestly I can think of several bands that I love even though they have sub-par vocalists. I think sub-par vocals can actually add more of a personal touch to a piece when done in the right context. Maybe I'll even get better with the practice.

Any advice on singing / recording / mixing vocals welcome. If you want to rip into my vocals or my lisp, go for it. I'm not easily offended :)

I actually really like your vocal work. You changed the diction of some of the phrases, but the timbre of the vocals fits the piece really well. They could be produced a little more cleanly, but they're really not bad at all.

My favourite bit though is the vibes/xylophone , particularly the part at just after 1:00 in. It gives such a unique feel to this piece, and really lifts the mood.

Great work, very nice to listen to. =]

This was good, Love the guitar quality. you had a strange EQ'ing on your voice however. It would be nice if you put more effort in the vocals, and compressed them so they are louder. You are an alright singer :)

P.S - If you have time you should check my stuff :)

Jonah-B responds:

Thank you! I wasn't really sure how to eq the vocals since I've never actually done it and I didn't do any kind of studying on it. I just added a few things that sounded ok to my ears, but my ears are used to instrumental mixing so maybe I should work on that :)

I added compression to the vocals, but only to even out the dynamics. I didn't want an overpowering sound on them because of the off notes I hit. I'm not a big fan of doing covers, so I'll put more effort into the next vocal work I do. Thanks again! I'll definitely have a look at your stuff!
