Children's Overture

This piece is my submission for round two of the Newgrounds Audio Deathmatch 2012. I originally planned on it being a five minute epic, but time didn't allow for that. I scrambled up until the very last minute to finish this. It's rough, but I really put a lot of effort into this. A little about the music:

This piece depicts the world as I viewed it when I was a child . Everything was larger than life and adventurous, magical and intriguing. Evey day was a chance to discover something new. I tried to capture the feelings of curiosity, joy, and to an extent, anxiety that came with childhood.

I would like to scrap the ending and really finish this piece. It was a joy to work on so far and I'd like to clean it up when this contest is over.

Dangg that composition is spot on. Sure, there a buncha little errors here and there, which I'm sure you know all about by this point, but I thought you'd just like to know that the melodies are seriously great.

You know what this reminds me of? Wind Waker. Particularly the sailing theme - it has that same sort of boundless optimism to it, which is something that I really enjoy in music.

You're actually one of my bigger influences on Newgrounds, because your specific brand of melodicism and your approach to music in general just really speaks to me. I hope to hear much more music from you. :)

BlazingDragon responds:

I was specifically thinking of Wind Waker when I wrote the middle section with the bass melody. :D

Thanks so much for the review. I love writing melodically, but my production skills have a long way to go. I love the polish and detail in many of your tracks. Maybe we can learn from each other!

This is not bad at all. The melodies feel very familiar, though... It's not that they are identical to something that was already done, but they do leave an impression of being a little generic.

BlazingDragon responds:

I don't hear any of them as being particularly generic, but thanks for the input anyway. :)

Interesting piece.

BlazingDragon responds:

Thanks! I'll check out some of your pieces.

I'm impressed with this piece. Thoughtful approach; I like that the melody falls to the lower strings and is countered by the high winds, followed by low brass, etc. - makes for an interesting listening experience. Well done.

This submission definitely has one of the best and most unusual themes. The harmonic content of this track is just amazing, and in my opinion the most immediately impressive part. After a long while of struggling with the guitar to find out just what the hell you're doing with the chords, I just can't figure it out. It's kind of lydian, kind of harmonic minor, kind of none of these and kind of both, all I know for sure is it's intriguing as hell.

The instrumentation fits the composition perfectly. Particularly the opening stands out to me as incredibly lifelike, but the instruments sound great and organic throughout the rest too (that double bass has balls, man). The piece also has moments like 1:06 where the sophistication gives way to beauty for a moment. And everything just flows nicely and smoothly.

I have two problems with this song, a major one and a minor one: It simply doesn't have the length to really develop enough to amaze me, and the trumpets sound somewhat off. :)
