Made in FL Studio 9.

I'm not really done with this song, but I'm not sure where to go. I didn't want to upload it with a sudden, jarring stop, so I threw some chords on the end. They sort of work. Anyway, I want your opinion. How is it so far? Where should I go from here?

I think you'll need to get a little better at mixing and humanization, judging by this track.

Listen to a real piano record, and the dynamics are well, dynamic. This piece itself sounds a little flat, the left hand especially. It kind of sounds like you used the base piano library in FLstudio, which in itself isn't bad, but you need to mess around with FL9's filter effects to evoke a more realistic sound - I like using a bit of Fruity Reverb, and Stereo Enhancer.

Like I mentioned, dynamics are important - they liven things up and add a bit of variety. This piece has everything just kind of plink out in mezzo-forte, which gets a little tired after awhile. I've made the same mistake when I started using FL Studio close to 3 years ago - you find that playing a piece is not the same as sequencing!

As well, the song never really takes a break - it's always rushing forward, not allowing you to think about what's going on because the left hand is always grabbing your attention with its constant movement. If that is what you were going for, that's fine I guess, but you need to be careful with compositional techniques like that lest they bore your listener.

If you keep on trying, you'll only improve (I'm still improving!), so don't take this too harshly- the better you get at the program you use, the better your music sounds. Good luck.

Lefoby responds:

First of all, thanks for the review.

This was my first attempt at using FL Studio to make a more "traditional" composition. Usually I use Finale for this sort of thing. I kind of forgot about adding any sort of dynamics.

As to the left hand: I kind of filter out that sort of thing. The only effect it really has on me is to create a sort of flowing movement beneath the movement -- sort of like the quiet sounds of water from a river. But I understand what you're saying. I'll see what I can do.
