Sounds like we're inside the head of Darth Vader.
This is an endlessly looping dark ambient piece that was originally part of a sound installation. The idea is a feeling of being lost in cold, lonely deep space, with moments of wonder at the beauty of what you might see.
The setup in its original performance was as follows:
- Dark studio room, lights out!
- 3 seats, each with a pair of headphones
- The headphones play back only the "in-helmet breathing" sound
- 4 speaker surround sound plays only the soundscape music
- A circular screen hangs from the ceiling directly in front of the 3 listeners, with a projector behind it playing full HD 1080p footage from the National Geographic documentary "Journey to the Edge of the Universe"
- As it does here on NG, the installation looped endlessly both audio and video, so people could come and go as they pleased
For best effect, set it up as detailed above and you'll get the full experience. In the meantime, I thought I'd make a combo file of the two sound sources and give everyone a a taste of what the installation might have been like.
I recommend loading up this video on youtube, muting it, and listen to the music: www.youtube.com/watch?v=w QKoFCbV5kg
There is no end to this piece! Enjoy.
Sounds like we're inside the head of Darth Vader.
It certainly conveys a sense of eeriness very well. However, with such regular breathing, it feels as if the "character", or one self if that's what it's supposed to be interpreted as, is able to keep calm and remain unaffected by the environment he/she's in. Perhaps the breathing should have been "designed" around the ambient audio, perhaps opposed to composing the track around the breathing?
Pretty cool, but...
I think the breathing was cool and especially the way it keeps the "beat", tough I wish it was more "random" and didn't confine itself to a beat.
It was pretty cool, but I wish you could have mixed down the breathing after a while, the way the song "mutates" from a creepy atmosphere to a really symphonic piece really took me by surprise (in a good way).
In all, a pretty cool song, but it could need some improving :)
Creepy...... :D
Wow. I love to heard how this would sound with all the surround sound. Personally, I thought the breath was a little creepy, and kinda annoying when he was breathing in. I think the loop would have been cooler without it. It a great track of ambience music though. Keep it up.
I did try to link, but for some reason it kept sending me to the main youtube page instead of to a specific video. You might want to check your link.
Hope that helped!! If you want, feel free to check out my channel. :)
Yeah, the original presentation of this piece didn't mix the breathing and the other audio directly, but I had no choice to make it all one combined stereo mix for NG. Based on your comments, perhaps I'll lower the volume level of the breathing for this mix and re-upload.
Oh, and NG always automatically puts spaces in URLs, it's unavoidable. Just have to remove them and the link will work. :)
Thanks for the review!
Please contact me if you would like to use this in a project. We can discuss the details.
