There was a massive angry crowd standing outside the capital building. Jeremiah and I watched the so-far peaceful protest, detached and indifferent. So far the police had only formed a defensive barrier around the entrance, but had not moved to disperse the crowd, and the protestors had not pressed their luck.
Jeremiah pointed to a kid with sandy blond hair, around twelve years of age, stooping down to pick up a rock.
"See that kid? He holds the fate of the world in his hands."
I laughed. "Oh come on! That little kid? What are you talking about?"
"I'll show you. But first, lemme ask you a question: do you wanna see the world end?"
"Dude, you are so full of shit. Yeah, sure. You go ahead and end the world."
He nodded and strode down the hill towards the boy who was hefting his rock, but wasn't sure whether or not to throw it.
Jeremiah scooped up a brick and approached the kid. He took the rock and gave the brick to the kid, leaning in to talk in his ear. As he came back towards me, the boy hurled the brick with all his might over the heads of the crowd. The projectile crashed down on the helmet of the foremost officer in the line and he crumpled.
All hell broke loose. The cops sprang into action with tazers, clubs and mace. The crowd responded with violence instead of fearful submission, screaming their hatred as they ganged up on the small brigade of law enforcement.
Jeremiah and I beat it out of there and made it to a nice safe vantage point on a rooftop half a mile back. By then the riot police had been dispatched, but it was too late. One of the officers had opened fire in self defense and the mob was beating him to death. Others had broken open the gate heading after the politicians.
Little did I know that what I was seeing now was only the first event in a chain reaction that had lead to the Nuclear Revolution, the tragedy that eventually wiped out 80% of the human race and drove it underground. To this day still I remember Jeremiah's profound words of wisdom which I had rolled my eyes at when they were spoken.
"See that kid? He holds the fate of the world in his hands."
Why Jeremiah would do knowingly do something so...malevolent, is beyond me. But he was only the catalyst. The politicians and bankers already pushed too hard. It was only a matter of time before something gave.

nice!

interesting dynamic here! i do wish there was a bit more of a buildup/pay off in the middle and end. it starts off really intense and seems to maintain the intensity but not build off of it. nice overall!
