Superfluous High (NGADM '11)

The general vibe I got from this song when making it was a quirky, over-the-top kind of peppiness that didn't suit my usual style. It only made sense to me that this feeling couldn't be normal (in the song's interpretation, mind you). You could think of this track representing a sort of false confidence or temporary absence of rational thought (oh yeah, haven't made a piece about that before :3).

1:33 is a brief, intense part of the high. It's wub-tastic, if I do say so myself.

The crash or "waking up" part of the song is at 3:00. Just picture some guy falling to his knees, screaming "What have I done?!?!?" or something, hehe. The consequences of the actions he took while under the effect of the high aren't too severe. Nothing more than what you would describe as a bad day. This is merely showing how crazy one day could be, given the right circumstances. Now that I think about it, how could a situation like this come about?

Hmmm...

Some new things I tried with this song include:

-Kick drum layering
-Using a parametric EQ (hopefully properly)
-Using send tracks (aux buses) for time-based effects, like reverb and chorus
-Trimmed the beginning/end of the track to reduce silence as best as I could

Some problems that I am anticipating people to find (if they are problems at all) include:

-Kick drum is too loud
-Bass levels are all over the place (I have new headphones)
-Snare drum is too loud at 1:00

This is my third round entry for NGADM '11. Enjoy!

Very cool

Heh, kind of makes me think of Rush who is a pretty cool band to hear. Very nice beat you have done with yourself here as well. Now it just needs some cartoonishly high pitched vocals like the vocalist of Rush has to go with it too. Also kind of makes me think of Galaga as well with parts of the beat too. Very nice song.

The keyboard sounds incredibly cheesy and yet so mellow at the same time that it makes you feel like smiling all day too. The bass is nice and I like it a lot. Liked the distorted keyboard part as well, pretty sweet thing right there I think. The drums sound complex on the kicking but very cool still.

Overall, really nice piece of work, I do like it.

Rush?!?!?! AGAIN?!?!?!

Cool.

Ha, it does have a cheesy quality to it, now that I listen for it. Glad you liked the bass.

Thanks for reviewing!

different, but I think I get what you are going 4

Not a bad piece, and I really enjoyed the different directions that you when with this piece; I could hear a lot of drum & bass influence to the beginning part, while the break really reminded me of a progressive rock jam break (almost Rush style). I also really liked the organ/ guitar samples that you brought in through-out the song :) very different :D

Somethings could have used some touching up here as well though; the drums didn't not sound too great and although I loved the drum patterns, the samples themselves didn't sound nice with the rest of the song... seemed like that could have been taking away from the sound you seem to be going for. The mastering is good, but I would also take a look at that as well; this piece seems like it could be mixed a bit better as well.

Overall, not a bad submission... could use some work though

Hey, improving's the name of the game here -- just trying out some new headphones; stuff might be a bit bass-heavy at first.

Glad you thought it sounded like Rush -- they're pretty cool.

"the drums didn't not sound too great" -- I take it you didn't like them! I felt they were appropriate samples, but I was compressing them, so maybe that was it. Doesn't matter; duly noted.

The mastering was good, but the mix needs work?!?!?! Is that even possible lol

Ah God, what do I know anyways, hehe. Yeah, I was attempting to make it brighter at some point; didn't quite work.

Sounds to me like one step forward, two steps back, eh? I'll see what I can do for next time. Thanks for taking the time to review this!
